Grading Policy

Student Grading Policy

Each student is responsible for earning his/her grade.  Grades are not “given”.  Below is a basic breakdown of the grading policy:

A student’s grade consists of 4 parts:

Attendance, Responsibility, Attitude, Respect & Improvement                     40%

In class performance and quizzes                                                                        30%

Concert Attendance and performance                                                                20%

Music enrichment activities                                                                                 10%

Take note:

A "B" of some sort (B-, B, B+) is a decent grade and pretty easy to get in band if one does the requirements and comes to rehearsals and lessons! Very few people get less than a B-.

How do you get a B or B+ ?

  • Complete the scales, quizzes, or other requirements
  • Come to all rehearsals and lessons (missed ones may be made up before or after school)
  • Attend all concert performances
  • PRACTICE!!!! (Practicing for lessons counts as practice; it does not have to be practice on the band music)

How do you get an A- or A ?

  • Do all of the above and
  • Turn in some enrichment points

ENRICHMENT POINTS

Enrichment points are ways for the student to improve his/her musical skills and playing.  They include, but are not limited to:

  • Private lessons
  • Extra Help Sessions (Tuesday and Thursday after school or by appointment)
  • Extra performance group that meets weekly on your band instrument: (Jazz Band, NYSO, Sax Quartet, Woodwind Quintet etc)
  • Extra performance group that meets weekly that is NOT your band instrument:  (includes NYSO/or outside chorus, church choir, select chorus, orchestra (if you play a string instrument in addition to your band instrument, piano etc).
  • One time performance on your instrument outside of school: Junior District Auditions or Festival, church performance, Birth to Three Concerts, Performing at Borders, Zumi’s etc.
  • Extra practice above and beyond the required weekly 90 minutes.
  • Smart Music Practice (at home or at school)
  • Listening to a recording of a piece we are working on (not every piece is available on recording) and writing down your thoughts about what you heard.  More thoughts equal more points.
  • A written review of a rehearsal clip from our website or blog!
  • Attend a concert.  Bring in a program and earn points or write a review of the concert and earn more points.

The list is endless.  Do you have something you would like to add?  Let Miss Fab know and we can work something out.

Students need to complete an enrichment form for each quarter.  It is the responsibility of the student to make sure enrichment activities are documented and handed in!
