Walk Across America Challenge

The Walk Across America Challenge is a reading incentive program for our class, which will run the entire school year.  In this program, students will accumulate miles on a map of the United States, based on the number of pages they read during the school year.  Every page that a student reads this year counts toward miles around the United States, from state capital to state capital.  A trip around the United States, visiting every state capital (including Alaska and Hawaii), is approximately 18,339 miles ("as the crow flies"). For every page that a student reads, they will receive credit for 2 miles toward the Walk Across America Challenge.   For every state capital that a student travels to they will receive a state sticker to be used on a passport, which will be in class to document their journey.  Students will receive incentives along the route if they are able to acquire 10, 20, 30, 40, or 50 state stickers.  For those who complete the entire 18,339 miles (9169 pages) they will receive a special incentive at the end of the school year.  Believe it or not, we already have a few students who are already 1/4 (already having read over 2000 pages!) of the way toward the end of the school year goal!

We are looking forward to the dividends that this focus on reading will pay for this group of students this school year!  Enjoy your Walk Across America!
