 Notes on my Work

Sometimes my work becomes a meditation, in a poetic sense, on growth, decay and the emotional substance of life.

There are two elements that have remained consistent over the years:

The first is the reference to objective reality. The second is the use of line as the vehicle of visual language which most sustains my work. The line carries the message, for what it’s worth. It describes what is seen and felt. It is weighty, energetic and at times, ethereal.

My palette is restricted allowing me to focus on aspects of linear form and contrast. There is a certain amount of expressive potential in this approach to be explored.

Just as musical notes can evoke images, the marks of a visual language may call up
the sound, for example, of a forest …

One need only look to the Zen artists, their love of the natural world and their ability to bring the spirit of that world to life with a simple brush stroke, to understand the “notes” of an image that is spare but truly felt.

A place reveals itself as a landscape distilled by memory and all that memory brings with it… a stirring of the senses.
