The concept of the summer internship is based on the belief that management education is incomplete without exposure to the corporate world. Summer internship is an essential academic requirement for the first year students of the Post-Graduate Programme (PGP) and the Fellow Programme in Management (FPM). Summer interns chosen by an organization join at the end of the first year and the internship lasts about 8-9 weeks (from Mid-April, 2009 to Mid-June, 2009). The summer assignment provides a unique experience for the student in the following ways:-
· Gives a chance to apply concepts learnt in the first year to practical scenarios while trying to add as much value as possible to the organization · Exposure to the workings of an organization and the links across the different functions · Helps the student make a more informed decision regarding the career path to choose By recruiting summer interns, organizations also get a chance to form a unique relationship with the institute. This enables them to gauge the potential of a candidate over a two-month long period. Companies offer internships for the following reasons:- · Summer interns are skilled workforce who come armed with fresh thought and unbridled enthusiasm. They are in a unique position to provide an objective and point of view about the organization’s work processes · Several companies prefer internships over interview-based final recruitment as a more comprehensive method of evaluating potential employees. Trends from previous years indicate that more than a third of the batch are awarded PPOs bearing testimony to the performance of IIMK students during internships and the recruiters’ preference towards rewarding deserving candidates by getting them on-board · The students also act as effective ambassadors for the organization on campus, spreading awareness about the company in general
