On December 26, 2005 Dan Nichols, one of our firefighters, died in a tragic accident on his way home from his job at the Des Moines Fire Department. Dan left behind a wonderful wife and 5 children.
Dan started serving the citizens of Indianola in 1999. He was hired on the Des Moines Fire Department in 2004. Dan was a paramedic on both departments at the time of his passing. He also served in the United States Marine Corps.
Dan was an avid runner who enjoyed being outdoors. He participated in many community sports and ran in many races in the metro area. The Indianola Firefighters Association will honor Dan’s memory by holding an annual Race for Dan in Indianola, Iowa.
This year's
races will be held at Lake Ahquabi State Park, Saturday, June 16th.
The
Triathlon will promptly start at 8:00 a.m. Please be at the beach shelter at
Lake Ahquabi 7:30 a.m. for Triathlon race meeting.
The Fun Walk, 5K and
10K races will begin promptly at 11:30 a.m. starting at the beach shelter. Please be at the beach shelter at Lake Ahquabi at 11:00 a.m. for 5K/10K race meeting.
This year’s proceeds will split between Dan’s family and the Indianola Firefighters Association.
The course designers have selected paths friendly to those new to the sport, as well as exciting for experienced triathletes competing for personal bests.After a 320-meter swim in Lake Ahquabi , race participants will cycle a 25K out-and-back route to Milo, primarily on a rolling road in a rural area. The 5K run is a scenic loop around the lake using trails and pavement in the state park.
The 5K & 10K races will consist of the same route used for the Triathlon.
