MondayDay trip to Atchison, Kansas.  Located 60 miles northwest of Kansas City, Atchison is a picturesque small Kansas Town.  Birthplace of Emelia Earhart, the town is full of small museums dedicated to Earhart as well as other historic figures.  There are Victorian home lined streets visible by walking or viewing from the Atchison Trolley.  Atchison is also home to many unique shops, most famously Nell Hills owned by nationally acclaimed home decorator Mary Carol Garrity, and several local restaurants.  www.atchisonkansas.net.   Depart hotel lobby at 9 a.m. and return around 4:00 p.m..  Transportation Cost:  $35.

 

TuesdayCrown Center Area.  Just north of the hotel lies Crown Center, the headquarters for all things Hallmark (www.crowncenter.com).  Enjoy the Hallmark Visitor’s Center, a museum dedicated to the history of the company and head over to the shops at Crown Center where you are sure to find unique one-of-a-kind shops.  Across the street from the shops is the National World War I Museum (www.libertymemorialmuseum.org) and Union Station (www.unionstation.org), saved from ruin and historically restored several years ago.  Our Union Station was the set for Robert Altman’s movie “Kansas City.”  There are also many good restaurants in this area as well as five theaters, many showing afternoon plays.  If you are traveling with kids, don’t miss Kaleidoscope (www.crowncenter.com) or Science City (www.unionstation.org).  Depart hotel lobby at 10 a.m. and return around 4:00 p.m..  Transportation Cost:  $15.

 

Wednesday:  River Market.  North of downtown is Kansas City’s largest Farmer’s Market.  There are shops and stalls for everyone.  There are also many good local restaurants and the Steamboat Arabia Museum.  The Steamboat Arabia is a significant salvage find preserving and showcasing a by-gone era. www.kansascityrivermarket.com).  Depart hotel lobby at 9:00 a.m. and return around 2:00 p.m..  Transportation Cost:  $15. 

 

Wednesday afternoon:  High tea at the Intercontinental.  The Hotel Intercontinental is located on the Country Club Plaza.  It is a beautiful and elegant setting for an afternoon tea which is a tradition for the Hotel. www.ichotelsgroup.comDepart hotel lobby at 2:30 p.m. and return around 5:00 p.m.  Transportation cost: $0 (provided by hotel).

We are staying on the Country Club Plaza (www.countryclubplaza.com) which has many unique shops and restaurants.  There are also many familiar chain stores and eateries.  Less than one half mile away from the hotel is the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art (www.nelson-atkins.org) and the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art (www.kemperart.org) The Toy and Miniature Museum is also nearyby (www.toyandminiaturemuseum.org).

 

The Crossroads (www.crossroadskc.com) is an area of downtown north of Crown Center.  This area is full of art galleries, local restaurants, and unique shopping.  A branch of the Kemper Museum opened here in November.  This branch showcases local art talent.

 

New to Kansas City is the Power and Light District (www.powerandlightdistrict.com).  Located north of the Crossroads, the area is home ot the Sprint Center and many clubs and restaurants.
