The Year in Review

Thomas Jepsen

As the year draws to a close, it is a good time to reflect on what we have accomplished in 2008.  In general, it was a good and productive year for the Eastern North Carolina Section.  We hosted a wide variety of technical activities in all our active chapters.  Just to name a few of the highlights:

  • The Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS) chapter sponsored a presentation on health record banking; together with the new Lasers and Electro Optics Society (LEOS), they co-sponsored a presentation on nanosensors for biomedicine.
  •  John Powell took over as the new chair of the Computer Society, and initiated a computer gaming event and a talk on the status of Web 2.0 applications.
  • The Renaissance Computing Institute at North Carolina State University (RENCI) invited us to their open house to showcase the latest visualization technology.
  • Our Embedded Systems (EmbSys) affiliate group sponsored several presentations by Dr. James Anderson of UNC – Chapel Hill on realtime scheduling.
  • The Industrial Electronics Society (IES) chapter was re-instituted by our IEEE Fellow, Dr. Mo-Yuen Chow, who formerly was chair of the Computational Intelligence Society; this post has been taken over by Le Xu.
  • The Power and Energy Society (PES) chapter chaired by former Section Chair Roger Lawrence held several presentations on alternative energy that were extremely well attended.

2008 was a good year for membership development as well.  The Eastern North Carolina Section showed a significant gain in membership this year, particularly among higher grade members.  Kudos to Jim Ray, our 2008 Membership Chair, for helping to make this happen; we’d also like to welcome Laura Faulconer as our new Membership Chair.

Our annual family picnic was a great success as well.  Over 200 attendees showed up at the New Hope Valley Railway for a steam train excursion and picnic meal on September 27.  I hope all of you were able to enjoy the excellent photos of the event that John Baker, our newsletter editor, placed on the website

This is truly a good time to celebrate our successes and reflect on our accomplishments during the past year.  However, we also need to look forward to the future. These are difficult times economically, and we can all look forward to challenges in the coming year. Participating in IEEE activities is a great way to stay abreast of developments in your technical field and maintain the network of friends and colleagues that is so important to a successful career.

I sincerely wish all our members a happy holiday season and a new year full of promise.
