Splinters from the Chair

Interesting Times
Thomas Jepsen

As we move into fall, these continue to be interesting times for IEEE-ENCS.  As we noted in the last newsletter, energy continues to be a hot topic.  North Carolina State University, one of our leading educational institutions, has been selected as the site of the National Science Foundation Research Center  for Future Renewable Electric Energy Delivery and Management Systems - the FREEDM Systems Center.  Roger Lawrence, chair of our own energy-related group, the Power and Energy Society, will sponsor a presentation on wind energy in October.

Many activities continue in other chapters as well. John Powell
of the Computer Society would like your input on holding a video gaming tournament in the Triangle area - please read his article below. Dr. Linda Hayden and her colleagues at the Elizabeth City State University Geoscience and Remote Sensing chapter sponsored a lecture on microwave remote sensing by Dr. Richard Moore of the University of Kansas as part of their Distinguished Lecturer series. The Lasers and Electro Optics Society (LEOS) chapter is sponsoring a symposium on components for optical sensing, to be held on September 25.

And lastly, we would like to thank Theresa-Marie Rhyne and the staff at the Renaissance Computing Institute at North Carolina State University (RENCI) for graciously hosting us at their open house on
September 4. We never cease to be amazed at what they have been able to do in the fields of visualization and computing.

As the new year approaches, let us know what you think we should be doing for our membership.  Ideas for presentations, symposia, and social events are always welcome.  Feel free to share your opinions - we're here to serve the membership!
Best Regards
