Abela Giovanni Maria  [active end of 16th Century]

 

We know very little about this painter. He was Maltese and lived in the XVI century. A realist of his age but rather provincial in his works. His competence was limited, having executed a series of altarpieces, depicting, The Madonna of the Rosary. He was familiar with outside influences because the large canvas at Imdina Cathedral resembles closely the panel found in Ischia

Alden Harry   [b.1929]

 

   Born in Valletta on the 15th of December 1929.  Alden started learning art at the Gov. School of Arts.  In 1962 he received a  four year scholarship at Croydon College of Art. U.K.  For a time he taught art at the St.Michael Teachers' Training College.  Between 1978 and 1983 he took part in the International Biennale of Graphic Design in Brno, Czeckoslovakia.  In 1987 he was appointed head of the Malta School of Arts.  He had several personal exhibitions in Malta and abroad.  He is also author of several postal stamp designs.  He is married to Rose Pace.

Apap Ninu  [b.1928]

 

   Born in Xaghra, Gozo on the 16th November 1928, son of Emmanuel and Antonia. Began art studies with Italo Orazio Serge and continued with the figurative and design under Guzeppi Briffa.  He took part in several collective exhibitions.

He did altarpieces for a Maltese ran Parish in Canada and also small works commissioned by Maltese missionaries in Brazil, India, and Kenya.

His works are also found in many private collections in Malta and abroad.

 

 

Saint Anne [1989]

   Willie Apap was born in Valletta on the 26th June 1918. In 1933, he joined with the Government School of Arts where he won a scholarship to study at The Regia Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome, where, he spent most of his life.  He continued to study under Professor Carlo Siviero. He was brother to Vincenzo Apap with, whom, in January 1962; he had a joint exhibition at the Grabowsky Gallery in London.
He is better known as a portrait painter but was active enough in sacred art. We find altarpieces in Italian churches, such as Santa Sita in Terni and The Sacred Heart of Jesus in the Marian Sanctuary of the Madonna di Capocroce in Frascati.
His name is listed in the Enciclopedia Universale Della Pittura Moderna, in the Catalogo Bolaffi del Arte Moderna and in the Arte Italiana nel Mondo.
He Died in Rome on the 3rd of February 1970.
