IBA Social Sciences Society and SAMAA TV bring you the first ever

'IBA National Documentary Competition'

The competition is in line with the vision of this society. To create awareness about the social problems that effect our society. Here is your chance to get heard. The competition is open to every student from a HEC  recognized Pakistani university and to students from all A 'level and Inter schools.
You do not have to be a professional just need to have something to say.

So get your cameras out and get started.

To make this as interactive as possible and to get everybody involved, you will be judging the documentaries. The best 3 will be those videos which manage to get the most votes. The final ranking will be done by a panel of 5 judges. These judges will be from the media and social works background.


The theme of the competition is 'Justifying violence'. The topic can be interpreted in anyway you choose. The documentary can be about the violence going on in our country, in Iraq in Palestine, in Darfur, in Nigeria and in many other places in the world. The documentary could also be on topics like domestic or child abuse, it could even be about violent sports.

Documentaries should be

Originality-The viewpoint expressed should be the participants own. Also the documentary should be made in such a way that it is creative and entertaining.

 

Depth- It should deal thoroughly with the issue that has been chosen. The basic purpose of this competition is to raise awareness and encourage discussion. And real awareness and discussion will ensue only if detailed and focused attention is given to the content.

 

Well structured- The documentary should contain a defined pattern of thought to get across its viewpoint.

 

Ethical- We do not wish to discourage expression of controversial opinions or ideas. However certain ethical guidelines should be followed regarding the content.

            Should acknowledge sources from which material is taken.

            Should respect the rights of all religious and ethnic groups

            Not use any material which is inappropriate.

            Material should not be too gruesome or distasteful.

Any material which does not follow these ethical guidelines will not be considered in the competition.


Format of submissions needs to be either in ‘avi’ or ‘wmv’ format. If using MiniDV tapes to record your material please get it converted so that it becomes possible to edit them on your PC. This service is easily available in many places. In Karachi for example a possible location where this service is available cheaply is Rainbow Centre. Also please make sure that the bit rate of the final video is no lower then 3 mbps.

 

  Besides getting a chance to be heard and open your minds and to other new perceptions we also promise award money to the creators of the top three documentaries.

1st Prize-Rs 25,000
2nd Prize Rs 15000
3rd Prize Rs 10,000

In addition to this the top three documentaries will be aired on SAMAA TV, along with any others that are chosen.


The winners will also be awarded a 1 year job contract BY SAMAA TV.


So come on, here's your chance to be original, to be creative and even to be controversial and get rewarded for it.
