The 2006 IAA award of excellence winner in the tension structures (10,000 to 30,000 square feet) category is the Pabellón de Estado, Airport Madria Barajas, created by Hightex GmbH, Rimsting, Germany. The International Achievement Awards have recognized design and technological innovation and excellence in the specialty fabrics industry. According to IFAI research, 13.2 million square yards of lightweight-structure fabrics were used in 2006.

The dominant fabrics for lightweight structures are coated polyethylene, coated polyester and coated fiberglass.

A recent industry poll indicated that creating shade structures designed for sun protection is the current trend in the lightweight-structure industry
