A surprising birthday present, but even more surprising happenings...

A week of webs, woofs, and wonders... You will enjoy The Day and Night Machine, especially if you are a younger reader, if you like a bit of fantasy, a bit of danger, a bit of mystery. And family. And puppies. And a whole lot more. A most unexpected present Jess has been in bed for nearly a year, the result of a car accident which killed her father. We meet her on her first full day out of bed, her thirteenth birthday. Surprisingly, she finds a present from her father, an unusual present for a girl and one which she, her grandfather, and her mother, puzzle over. And unexpectations abound A strange dog appears sort of by magic, which helps, and Jess has her own special danger forecaster hanging from her bedroom ceiling. And danger comes to her, in the shape of the nasty red-headed Miss Sturzen. It doesn't take too long to find out what a day and night machine can do, and why Miss Sturzen wants it. Luckily there's a team of police puppies and a clever police sergeant to help Jess. And then, after an exciting and dangerous adventure, we discover the real reason for her father’s gift. My father was killed... This story took almost as long to write as Scratcher, due to writer's block about a third of the way though. The idea came from something that happened to me when I was a boy. My father was a rubber planter in Malaya, following interment as a WW2 prisoner-of-war in Singapore and the Burma Railway. He was ambushed and killed by terrorists in 1952, ten days before my thirteenth birthday - when I received in the mail a birthday present from him! The Day and Night Machine develops from the same event, but with many more strange and frightening things happening than I've ever experienced! After quite a long period I decided to re-write - and finish - the story as a screenplay, which then enabled me to complete the book. Talk about convoluted!! Fortunately all ends well, as you would expect. Well, not necessarily for everybody.
