Acutually i don't recommend it at all as a first-day stay because it is TOO old, dirty and messy. It's 94 years old so if you are interested it's not a bad idea to go there to see it as a visitor. It's not too late to stay after you see the building and atomosphere there.

It's 40min. from JR Kyoto Staion by bus.
