Malvern Gazette - Sports - Sword Fencing

Two years ago Worcester Fencing Club moved location to Sport Dyson Perrins in Malvern Link. In the last two years the club has built steadily and one success has followed another. As the second season in Malvern comes to an end there are plans afoot to introduce fencing into Primary schools in the Malvern area looking for Malvern’s next fencing superstar.

Malvern hosts the Hereford and Worcester Elite Squad Epee fencers who travel from all around the region to train at the club. 2008/2009 has already become the best in the clubs history with two club members, Amy Radford and Matthew Edgar, collecting medals in the Junior Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Malaysia.

Amy, who is also Under 17 National Champion, was joined at the Junior World Championships in Belfast by club mate James Harris where they represented Great Britain in both individual and team events. Amy, who at the age of 14 was ranked 72nd in the World Under 20 rankings, has her sights firmly fixed on next years World Championships in Azerbaijan.

This success has not been limited to a few individuals with Malvern College student Lucy Henshall medalling in the 2008 England Youth Championships, and Birmingham University students Hannah Chennour and Erin Spinlove both winning open events this year.

The clubs Junior section has also been growing with an ever expanding group of children hoping to follow in the footsteps of their older club mates. At the other end of the age scale Malvern also boosts a successful veterans section with Malcolm Fare and Simon Webb representing the West Midlands. It is a common sight in the club to see Malcolm, a past World Veterans Champion putting Alex Lloyd, the 2007 Under 11 National Champion, through his paces with youth and experience trading off to their mutual benefit.

With Club coach Matt Haynes moving back to the area fulltime it is hoped that development will expand and that the club will continue to provide large numbers of fencers for regional and national teams.
