You've heard the call to action to bring Google Fiber to Huntington. You're here now, and you're ready to give it your all! But how?

We want to try to generate as much "buzz" about Google Fiber as we can in Huntington for two reasons. First and foremost, we want Google to be able to hear us all the way over in Mountain View, California! But secondly, we also want to try to get as many people as we can excited about the future of broadband in Huntington.

The internet is a really big place, and we know it can be daunting at times, so we wanted to break a few things down for you to make sure that everybody in Huntington can roll up their sleeves and help us bring Google Fiber to Huntington. Don't know how to post a YouTube video showing your support for Huntington? Don't know what a Twitter is or where it came from? No problem! We're here to help.

Below you'll find some useful information on how you can use these powerful new communications tools to make your voice heard in Mountain View.

YouTube

Website: www.youtube.com
Founded: 2005

Description: YouTube is a site that allows you to share your videos with your friends and family and even the whole world. People upload videos to be entertaining, because they're bored, or to speak out for or against things they feel strongly about; many of the same reasons we talk to each other in person! YouTube wouldn't be nearly as effective as it is if you weren't able to add "tags" to your videos (such as "funny", "piano recital", or "Christmas morning") so people can find them out of the millions of videos on the site. We really don't even know yet how big the impact of mankind's ability to communicate so openly and globally yet, but we're already beginning to see some pretty amazing results.

How can this help Google Fiber Huntington? We have a Youtube channel at http://www.youtube.com/fiberHTG that is constantly being updated with new videos made by Huntingtonians who want Google Fiber.  You can contribute your video by either emailing it to why@whyhuntington.com or by uploading it to youtube and tagging it with "
googleFiberHTG
googleFiberHTG" and we will favorite them which will automatically add them to our channel (plus we'll mention them on our facebook fan page and on twitter).

What Should My Video Be About?

We realize it isn't always easy to get the creative juices flowing but please don't let that stop you from making a short video.  Here are some simple topics to help you get started:
  • What would you do with 100x faster internet service?
  • What would Google's investment in our community mean to you?
  • Try to imagine the most insane online thing you can think of - maybe it would be possible with Google Fiber
  • If you write software; how might you take advantage of Fiber to the Home to every home in Huntington?
  • How could your business grow locally and globally when 1 Gb/s internet speeds are a reality?
There is no reason not to make a video.  If you don't have a program but you have a webcam just sign into YouTube and click the "upload" link.  On the screen that appears there is a gray button that says "Record from Webcam" so you can record and upload directly from within the YouTube website.   After you click "Record From Webcam" you'll be asked if it is OK for the site to access your camera and mic.  Allow it and you'll be good to go.  You can even do multiple takes before you finalize your upload.

Thanks Everyone and remember to tag your videos "googleFiberHTG" (without the quotes) and keep track of our current videos at http://www.youtube.com/fiberHTG

Facebook

Founded: 2004

Description: Facebook is a "social networking site" that in many ways imitates your old class yearbooks. Everybody on the site makes a "profile picture" (like your yearbook photo) and can then add some basic information about themselves to build what's called their "profile". You build up your "friends list" by connecting to people you know (usually in real life, or "IRL" as we web geeks say), and then you and your friends can talk back and forth (either in public via your "wall" or in private via "private messages" or "PM's"), share videos, photos, news, and other links you find on the internet, or even play games with one another, no matter where in the world you may be at the time. Facebook has been wildly successful since its launch, and is reshaping the way people socialize in the 21st Century.

Blogging

Website: www.blogger.com, www.livejournal.com, www.wordpress.com, and many more!
Founded: 1997

Description: "blog (a contraction of the term "web log")[1] is a type of website, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order. "Blog" can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.

Many blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject; others function as more personal online diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, Web pages, and other media related to its topic. The ability of readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of many blogs. Most blogs are primarily textual, although some focus on art (Art blog), photographs (photoblog), videos (Video blogging), music (MP3 blog), and audio (podcasting). Microblogging is another type of blogging, featuring very short posts." (From Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia.)
