Sometime in the not-so-distant future, the weather is going crazy—huge storm systems, drought in some areas, deluge in others. Clara and her ten-year-old daughter Olivia have been relocated to Illinois after a massive hurricane wiped out Galveston (sorry, guys), and one day Olivia comes home late from school. She's been exploring an old abandoned hotel, located next to a gigantic national laboratory complex, and she's found three strange objects: an electronic key card; a distinctive blue silk scarf with silver stars; and an opalescent, holographic shell-shaped object that Olivia has decided must be a dragon's scale. After a newspaper feature writer interviews the family about their experiences in the flood, a picture of Olivia—wearing the blue scarf—appears in the paper next to a human interest story about flood survivors. That innocent picture begins to unravel a tightly wrapped national secret and set in motion a series of events that might change the history of the world. |  |
