About the Consortium The Consortium for Humanitarian Service and Education is a community of learning among colleges and universities in the United States and in Europe that provides intensive and realistic training programs for the disaster response and humanitarian leaders of tomorrow. The Consortium organizes international programs that develop adaptive multi-culturally competent problem-solving leaders committed to humanitarian ideals and selfless service to the global community. Every year the Consortium offers students and practitioners two exceptional opportunities to learn first hand how to conduct safe and effective disaster relief operations. One event is the week-long Atlantic Hope training exercise held every March in Florida. The other is a two-week long Summer Institute in International Disaster Relief and and Humanitarian Assistance held in Macedonia in May. The cornerstone of the Summer Institute is an intensive field-based simulation, named Svetlina, that recreates the challenges and conditions humanitarian operators will encounter in the field. Past participants have included students and practitioners in emergency management, humanitarian operations, peace-building, psychology, criminal justice, geography, and political science.
