Hulme Community Garden Centre was established 10 years ago to bring horticulture opportunities for all, greening Hulme and Moss Side. We provide leisure and recreational facilities in the interests of social welfare through the provision of community gardens and activities in horticulture.
We provide opportunities for volunteers to learn horticultural skills.
Our mission is to use this initiative, and the creativity of local people, to regenerate inner-city land into an accessible and sustainable community garden and nursery.
Volunteers are an integral part of our initiative without whom we wouldn't have achieved the many projects that we run.
If you would like to give your free time to help us in any capacity you can, we would
be very pleased to see you.
Volunteering can be undertaken at any time, with hours to suit you. We recommend however, that the best way to start is to ring and make an appointment for a visit and a chat. Our supported sessions are Wednesday and Friday. Sessions run between11am and 4pm. After a couple of weeks we can offer other days for volunteering to suit the volunteers if they do not require supervision.
We have a proven track record in working with other voluntary organisations and groups
and welcome any enquiries regarding
volunteer opportunities.
We welcome young people interested in advancing their education and vocational
training in horticulture and the day to day running and management of our garden centre.
We also welcome unemployed people
seeking employment and run, in conjunction with City College, an NCFE qualification in Creative Craft and Sustainable Development Level 1 Horticulture.
If you are interested in any of the above, give us a ring or just turn up to have a chat.

Our volunteers experiences, and what they have to say ...
"I have been a volunteer since February 2001 when there was only one cabin and one tunnel and lots of space. I come regularly once a week to make a pleasant change from being retired at home. I have undertaken all activities, from pricking out seedlings to major surgery on shrubs. I have learned a lot and I'm still learning at 74! I have seen remarkable development of the site, from derelict to impressive landscape. It is a tribute to the staff."
Richard
"I , like many others who live in the Hulme/Moss Side area live in a flat, with no communal garden, no balcony or room for pots, no recycling/composting facility, and more importantly greenery. I would watch gardening programmes on TV and really get the bug but I had no outlet. The Hulme Community Garden Centre (HCGC) has given me the freedom to come along when I can and dive in and get my hands dirty." Andrew
'Being a volunteer at the centre brings me closer to nature in my neighbourhood. It feels rewarding to know that the projects and work I do goes into people's homes. The co-workers are very friendly and helpful, the emphasis being on enjoying the work. There can be differet things to do - I am not just a labourer. I am looking forward to seeing how the work evolves in different seasons. Learning gardening skills means you can take them into other areas of life and work. Knowing that a lot of animals, insects and birds visit the garden, it is clear that we are helping the environment - long may this continue!" the brightly coloured dogwood.
Over the months Pawel will be taking
photographs of plants
and flowers at their best around the gardens
and we will use them to illustrate
this website. You can already see
a few of his wonderful photographs on our
current pages and purchase his photographs now as POSTCARDS in our shop.
