 Iris's ISpot ...

Hi, I’m Iris and I’m 10 years old.
I live very near to the Garden Centre and I love looking for all the types of small creature that you can find there. It’s amazing what you can find if you look hard enough. I take particular interest in the pond creatures and have taken a lot of pictures of what I have found there. My dad has taken pictures of lots of the insects and butterflies around the Garden Centre.

The trouble is that there are so many types and different species, that it was difficult at first to know exactly what my finds were. My mum was told about an Open University website called ISpot that wanted people to send them as many photographs and descriptions of creatures as possible – and if you are not sure what they are, there are experts who can help you identify them.

So here are some of the photographs that me and my dad have taken so far of the amazing wildlife at the Hulme Garden Centre.

If you want to know more about the ISpot  recording forum, why not visit the website at www.ispot.org.uk

Look who came one winter's morning! A little hedgehog wandered into the garden centre. But it was too soon to come out of his winter nest so we rescued him and took him to the hedgehog sanctuary in Whithington.

This is one of the two cats who comes in and curl up to sleep in some very unusual places. Here he is on the potato sack. He looks like he is saying 'What are you looking at? Go away!'

Last spring we had the visit from hundreds of frogs in our pond! It was really noisy and there was thousands of tadpoles. Come in to see how many we get this year.

Hello!
This is a grass head guy. Do you know how to make it? Here is how!

You will need:-
Some tights
Compost
Grass seed or water cress seeds
Buttons for eyes

First, fill the end of on leg of the tights with compost. Make sure you make a ball about the size of your fist or slightly larger.

Take a handful of grass seeds and push them into the ball making sure to cover the top and side of the compost with seeds. This is where the grass 'hair' will grow and you don't want it poking out of the poor guy's nose!

Then tie the tights with a knot where the neck should be and find a container to place it in, a saucer, a ball or even an old yogurt pot which you could decorate. The knot will be in the container of water and will serve as a wick to seep in the water to the grass seeds.

Decorate your head with buttons for eyes. You can shape your head with a nose if you squeeze in the middle of the face.

Fill the container with water and place your head on it, making sure the knot is in the water.

Sit back and relax and watch your grass head guy's hair grow!!

 Shrimp

Hoverfly – Xylota segnis
They have a preference for feeding on honey-dew secreted by aphids and can be seen sucking it off the leaf surface; they are rarely found at flowers.
