The HUG is an evidence-based, innovative, and family-friendly program to help expectant and new parents:
•understand the body language of their newborn, and •use this information to prevent and solve common problems with a newborn’s sleeping, eating, crying, and with parent-child bonding and attachment. •Parent-child bonding is enhanced when parents can read their baby’s body language.
•The HUG teaches parents to notice what “Zone” their baby is in and to respond to a baby’s SOSs (Signs of Over-Stimulation, which can interfere with feeding and bonding). •Effective patient education promotes parent satisfaction. •Satisfied parents feel they are "heard" by staff and are more open to "hearing" what childcare providers have to say. •Satisfied parents refer friends and family to a facility.
•Satisfied parents promote staff satisfaction. •Satisfied staff are more effective and have greater job retention. Ideas for incorporating The HUG into your childcare center...
•Provide continuing education training for your childcare providers
The HUG Introduction is a two-hour introductory class. It describes primary concepts of The HUG and presents real-life scenarios using The HUG with families. This class may be taken via the HUG Your Baby online training (available at www.hugyourbaby.com for $25) or as a two-hour on-site presentation. This class prepares participants to introduce The HUG concepts to families. Two Hours of Continuing education credit is provided by the NC Dept of HHS, Division of Child Development.
•Provide The HUG Parent Education DVD in childcare center's library or classroom for staff and parents. •Refer parents and staff to The HUG parent education Website, Blog, and Newsletters •Offer HUG Teacher Certification for interested staff who want to show leadership in care of little babies. •Offer a community-wide presentation, "Learn to Read the Body Language of Your Newborn & Be the Mom and Dad You Want to Be" by experienced and engaging speaker: Jan Tedder, BSN, FNP. What research was used to develop The HUG?
The HUG was based on the medical and child development literature of Drs. T. B. Brazelton, M. & P. Klaus, M. Lamb, M. & H. Papousek, B. Howard, R. Sturner and others. This research and Ms. Tedder’s materials have been presented at national and international conferences and published in JOGNN, MCN, and Journal of Perinatal Education. Formal clinical evaluation of The HUG is now in progress.
