Beaver Trip to York

posted 9 Nov 2010 11:25 by Huddersfield North Scouts   [ updated 20 Mar 2011 04:07 ]

A fun filled adventure to York. Travelling to York by train and then visiting the National Railway Museum saw the District Beavers definitely 'on the Rails!'
The highlight of the day for the young people (and some of the adults...) was seeing the "Hogwarts express" used in the Harry Potter films, we were lucky enought to be able to stand on the footplate and see the "ma
gic" coal that powers the train...

We also got to sit on the Japanese Bullet train and watch a video of the train in action.

On the day of our visit there was a large model railway show taking place in the museum, the young people were fascinated with the different layouts so dont be surprised if santa is asked for a train set this year !!!

We all also attended an interactive science show where experiments were shown to explain gravity , speed and forces.

Some of the Beavers were very keen to get involved with these and got to be part of the show.
I hope everyone had a great day out !!

Snow Way It’s Stopping Us!

posted 2 Mar 2010 10:13 by Huddersfield North Scouts   [ updated 9 Nov 2010 11:33 ]

On the weekend of 20th & 21st February 2010, Huddersfield North Scouts joined 200 others from across West Yorkshire to enjoy their annual Winter Camp at Bradley Wood Campsite. Whilst the rest of the country was coming to a standstill, the Scouts made the most of the snow and enjoyed a variety of snow related activities including skating, sledging, snowballing and ice climbing. The really brave even tucked themselves into hammocks and slept in the trees! (See picture)

Scout Olympics

posted 8 Feb 2010 13:33 by Huddersfield North Scouts

The call went out and it was answered by the swift and not so swift Huddersfield North’s Olympians. The second annual Scout Olympics was hosted again in the Great Hall of Newsome High School.

Three hours of intense shouting and sweating saw the teams of 6 (ish) from every Scout troop in the District, bar one, take on the new and not so new Olympic sports of Unihok, Cricket stumps, Badminton and Table Tennis.

Phil excelled again this year in his umpiring of Table Tennis when, with the able assistance of Jo, managed to teach the basics of stroke play, tactics and baffle everyone with the scoring system.

Again the shuttlecock soared through the steamy evening air often with the height requirement superseding the directional purpose. Luckily the requirement to count to 11 was within the mathematical capabilities of both Chris and our new French referee Jay.

Cricket Stumps has been one of the neglected sports in the International Olympiad of recent years but we revived it with gusto. Tom and Chris oversaw a wild variety of bowling actions from the fast Freddy Truman overarm, through the straight Bazooka throw to the slow trickle resembling a mountain stream. The sport has now achieved its rightful place in the Scout Olympic annals.

Unihok was a mainstay of the first Olympiad and remained so this year. The trick to this sport is the organisation of every team managing to play every other team and Dave Bottom was like a human supercomputer working out the combinations and timing the matches. The 2 Young Leaders from Oakes braved the centre of the court with their Ipods drowning the cries of pain, triumph and frustration of the contestants.

5-a-side Football and Basketball were introduced as non-combatant sports (ie the points didn’t count) and this seems to be the solution to Nuclear War threat of Football.

Sally Nook were strong again this year but by just one point Birchencliffe took the Gold and Cowcliffe, a new troop on the podium took Bronze. Oakes, Outlane and Bradley were enthusiastic participants with fewer points.

The night was a great development on last year’s event with over 45 contestants and a strong support from parents. Again we have to thank Phil and Newsome School for the brilliant venue.

Indoor Potholing

posted 8 Feb 2010 12:19 by Huddersfield North Scouts   [ updated 8 Feb 2010 12:23 ]

This year’s indoor potholing was another great success for the District.  Big thanks to all involved with the building and running of the event.

233 young people (plus a few adults, some of whom got stuck) enjoyed the course over the week that it was open.

The bad weather could have caused chaos, but thankfully it didn’t and the group that cancelled the first session were able to take part on the Sunday instead, so no-one was too disappointed.  Thank you to those running the event who were flexible enough to be able to accommodate this to ensure all who wanted to take advantage of the course while it was there were able to.

This year Beavers were able to take part, we had 33 Beavers crawling through the course this time; hopefully we can make it more next year as word spreads.
