Introduction to Computers 1

This is the beginning computer course offered at the McAuley Senior Center through SeniorNet.  It provides a fundamental introduction to computers, mouse and keyboard, and basic computer functions.  The Windows operating system is taught in one session.  The Vista operating system is taught in another session.  The student should choose the class session relevant to the operating system on their computer.

Introduction to Computers 11

The class is based on the basic functions in the Microsoft Works Suite 2003 program.  Beginning word processing, opening the Task Launcher and managing your files, working with Spreadsheets, creating and arranging a Database are some of the concepts taught.  Using Word Wizards and clip art, and communicating through electronic mail are also taught.

 

Prerequisites:  Introduction to Computers 1 or computer experience.

Exploring Windows

This class teaches Windows basics, Windows Explorer and file management.  Modifying the Taskbar and Start Menu as well as various Windows desktop and system settings are also taught.  You will become familiar with features of various Windows/Vista programs, customizing your system and maintaining your hard drive.

Introduction to the Internet

In this course you will learn the criteria for selecting an internet service provicer (ISP), common terminology used on the the Internet, how to sign on and navigate the World Wide Web, and how to resource information the Web using search engines.  Customizing techniques for Internet Explorer 7.0, establishing a Favorites base in Internet Explorer and how to download graphics from Web sites are also taught.  How to send and receive messages using Outlook Express 6.0, the technique of sending attachments, including pictures with email are also taught.  The class also teaches about privacy, security and commerce online.

Word Processing

This course introduces the student to some of the basic features offered by the Microsoft Word 2007 word processor.  Creating and editing a document, changing format of a document, producing envelopes and labels with desired addresses, creating footnotes/headers in documents, constructing work documents are covered.  A tutorial and diskette containing practice files are provided for the student to reinforce what is learned in class.

Spreadsheets

Learn to set up your own home finance management files.  Keep track of all your income and expenses; your stocks and bonds; and your valuables.  Perform calculations, analyze information, and manage lists in Excel spreadsheets are just a few of the many features the student will become familiar with by using Excel 2007.

Genealogy - Family Tree Maker

This is an introduction to genealogy using Family Tree Maker 2010.  The student is introduced to the basic components of the Family Tree Maker program.  The student is presented with many "hands on" exercises, tips, and resources.  Note:  this computer course teaches how to organize information and is not a genealogy course in how to research a family history.

Print Artist

The lessons are based on Print Artist Gold Edition 2002 / Version 15 and Adobe PhotoDeluxe.  This course contains eight lessons designed to introduce you to the creative and fun projects you can do on your computer even if you do not have Print Artist.  Lessons include making a pre-designed card, designing your own card, modifying a flyer, putting together albums, creating a craft project, and creating a pop-up card.  In addition, an introduction to scanners, creating a unique card with your scanned photo and improving picture quality and removing unwanted objects from a photo will be covered.

Digital Imaging

This course, using Photoshop Elements 2.0, addresses digital photo imaging.  It teaches the student how to make changes and enhancements to photographs that have been taken with a digital camera, scanned to a digital photo format or loaded from a CD or other media.  Lessons include how to resize and change photo resolution, merge, edit, restore, and add text using the Photoshop Elements tools.  The program includes how to cut, layer, and change the photo format for best quality or to use as an email attachment.  Course content does not include hands on use of digital cameras nor scanner to import photos into a computer but does include information on digital resolution, pixels, printing and storing photos to CDs, how digital color works, and other related information.  The student's home computer will need both the PhotoShop Elements 2.0 and Microsoft Windows 95 or higher.

Quicken

This course is comprised of eight lessons with step-by-step instructions designed to introduce you to the main features of Quicken 2006 Premier, a financial program that makes it easier than ever before for you to see your overall financial health, assess where you stand, and put a plan in place to get you where you want to go.  The lessons include:  getting started with Quicken, setting up accounts and categories, managing a checking account, using calendar, reminders and savings account processes. Budgets and creating reports/graphs, as well as Quicken's on line capabilities are also covered.
