A preview of our upcoming regular meeting programs, workshops, and demonstrations in the 2011-2012 year: January 7: Roc Day and Yarn Swap / Challenge noon-4pm, Lowe Mill, 2211 Seminole Dr SW, Huntsville January 21, 2012, 10am - 12pm: The Dorset Loom (in the lounge area in front of the Flying Monkey Theater on the second floor) The Lowe Mill Artist Market will also be happening at that time. Plan to bring your fiber projects to show what we do. The Yarn Swap was inspired by our viewing of Laura Bryant’s DVD, The Fiber Artist’s Guide to Color. Bring four 4-ounce balls of any fiber, different colors, suitable for weaving, knitting or crocheting. We’ll create a color river by sorting all the contributions by color weight. You’ll leave with as much fiber as you brought from one part of the color river. The Challenge is to create a sample color study in weaving, knitting or crocheting by the June meeting. The “fine print” will be discussed at Roc Day. Come to learn about color. Guild members can contact Colleen Laymon if they want to see Laura Bryant’s DVD, The Fiber Artist’s Guide to Color. You can bring as much yarn as you want for the Yarn Swap, but remember the Challenge! From Wikipedia--Distaff Day, also called Roc Day, is 7 January, the day after the feast of the Epiphany. It is also known as Saint Distaff’s Day, and was not really a holiday at all. In many European cultural traditions, women resumed their household work after the twelve days of Christmas. The distaff, or rock, used in spinning was the medieval symbol of women's work. Often the men and women would play pranks on each other during this day, as was written by Robert Herrick in his poem "Saint Distaffs day, or the Morrow After Twelfth Day". Some modern craft groups have taken up the celebration of Distaff Day as part of their new year celebrations. If you are bringing something bulky and difficult to move, please set up between 11:00 and noon with the visiting artists. If you think you'll want a table or extra light, put it in your car, but it might not be needed. No one is obliged to stay for the whole time, feel free to drop in and spin, knit, or just chat. Since it is Artist Market, sales are allowed. For details, see http://flyingmonkeyarts.org/artmarket.html. In part, no food can be offered for sale or give-away, and visiting artists are responsible for their own taxes and licensing. Where: Bailey Cove Library, 1409 Weatherly Plaza Drive, Huntsville, located SW of intersection of Bailey Cove Road and Weatherly Road, off west side of Bailey Cove Road, turn between Bailey Cove Eye Care and Dollar General. Lyna Rizor will share her Dorset loom with us. She has refinished the wood, and it is a lovely piece. The Dorset is a 4 harness floor loom with a weaving width of about 20 inches. It has a direct tie-up system with each of the harnesses permanently tied to one treadle. It was developed by F. C. Wood, and the design later used in the Schacht Spindle Company's Wolf Pup loom. Most of the program will discuss the parts of a loom, how it works, and invite people to try it for themselves. It is a sweet little loom, particularly suited to narrow projects and workshops.
