Egypt/Jordan October 2009

I've had very mixed feelings about my trip through Egypt- it was a place I've long imagined to go.  The actual experience of it was quite different. My eyes laid upon exquisite things of great beauty.  I'm quite reluctant to admit that the spectacular achievements of the Pharoah's Kingdom did not wow me in the ways I was overtaken by Petra and Wadi Rum.

Highs
  • Petra
  • Camel Riding in Wadi Rum
  • Snorkeling Ras Mohammed
  • Night snorkeling Nuweiba
  • Exquisite ceiling paintings of Ramses VI tomb in the Valley of the Kings. Also unfinished reliefs in Horemheb's tomb.
  • Ramesseum
  • Luxor template at night
  • Having the King Tut room all to ourselves for a few minutes at the end of closing time
  • A well cooked pigeon. Sahlab.
  • Impromptu guitar performance by Jordanian postman
Lows
  • 3rd world litter everywhere. in the sand, in the water
  • Degradation of the temples
  • Pollution and noise of luxor and cairo
  • Being hustled and duped in 3 countries
  • Constant bargaining
  • Bathroom trolls
  • Russian tourists from Hurghada
  • Greasy or over salty Egyptian food
  • Corniche tree trimmers
  • Habiba Village

All reports are true. Our cab driver started driving reverse for a few minutes so he could enter the highway.
