A Hovercraft is a craft supported by a cushion of slow moving, high-pressure air which is ejected against the surface below and contained within a "skirt."
It is capable of traveling over surfaces while supported by a cushion of slow moving, because they are supported by a cushion of air.
;)
A Hovercraft usually works with two engines, one creates the air cushion and the second pushes it forward, but you can use only one engine or a set of them if you need more or less power required or specific characteristics.

A Little history
The first mention in the historical record of the principles behind hovering and hover boats was by Swedish scientist Emanuel Swedenborg in 1716, but the idea of the modern hovercraft is most often associated with Sir Christopher Cockerell.
SR.N1 made its first hover on 11 June 1959, and made its famed successful crossing of the English Channel.
What is it used for?
Hovercraft are used throughout the world as specialized transports. They’re unique among all other forms of ground transportation in their ability to travel equally well over land, ice, and water. Small hovercraft are used for sport, or passenger service, while giant hovercraft have civilian and military applications.
