Cycling is in our roots, as the earliest hostellers in Minnesota were biking clubs. These organized rides are our primary fundraisers. Minnesota Ironman® Bicycle RideThe MINNESOTA IRONMAN BICYCLE RIDE (MIBR), established in 1967, is the longest running century bike ride in Minnesota. It is considered the Season Opener cycling event for the upper Midwest. With routes of 100, 65 and 30 miles, this single day bike tour has something for every cyclist. Held every year on the last Sunday in April in Lakeville MN, the Minnesota Ironman marks the start of the cycling season. Join us April 25, 2010 for MIBR #44! The MIBR has been managed since ‘67 by Hostelling International USA – Minnesota Council, a 501 (C)(3) non-profit charitable organization devoted to promoting healthy recreation, international travel and cultural exchange. A committee of volunteers organizes the event. An army of volunteers (some 300 strong) join us each year to produce the event. Tour De Pines Bike RideIn 2009 we decided to create a sister ride to the MIBR to highlight the great roads in and around Itasca State Park, where our hostel is located. Join us for the second annual Tour De Pines! There is no better way to appreciate the quiet beauty of the roads in that part of Minnesota than by bicycle. The tour begins and ends at the HI-Mississippi Headwaters Hostel in the heart of Itasca State Park. The routes follow the Wilderness Road through the park, and then venture out into the local forest and countryside. The roads are quiet, well paved, and wonderfully scenic. The ride ends with a BBQ meal at the hostel. Make a weekend of it and bring the family. This is a wonderful event. The second annual Tour De Pines takes place Saturday, August 21, 2010. |
