Many people mistakenly think you should start with a small hoop and when you can manage that maybe try a bigger hoop. This is wrong, and if you think about it logically adults struggle to use children's toy hoops, not because they themselves are "useless" but because the hoop is too small (and too light) Small Hoops are harder to master, so always start with a bigger hoop, and then as you get more experienced you can try a smaller hoop to see what works for you. It is also a good idea to use a larger hoop when learning a new trick or move. Once you have mastered a new move you should then be able to perform it with your normal standard hoop because the skill is exactly the same, but the movement will be quicker, (because smaller hoops move more quickly) If you are a Lady please use this chart: Dress size up to 8, use a 36 inch hoop Dress size 10 to 14 use a 40 inch hoop. Dress size 16 to 18 use a 44 inch hoop. Dress size 20 to 24 use a 48 to 50 inch hoop. For Men please use this size chart: Waist size up to 26 inch use a 36 inch hoop Waist size 28 to 32 inch use a 40 inch hoop Waist size 34 to 38 inch use a 44 inch hoop Waist size 40 to 44 inch use a 50 inch hoop. The sizes specified above are for a "medium speed" hoop experience. You can use the next size down for a faster hoop, or a size larger for a slower hooping experience. Remember, the slower the hoop moves, the more graceful you will appear in performance. The faster the hoop moves the harder the workout, but the more quickly you will get tired and bored with hooping.
