Myth Busting

Be careful what you believe, and quote to others.....  There are many wild claims out there in Internet-Land

We aim to give you the facts, not the fiction about Hooping.

Myth #1:  20 to 30 minutes of Hooping per day will take two inches off your waist every month !!!

Fact #1:  OK, so it is possible to drop one to two inches from your waist in a month with 20 to 30 minutes of hooping per day, but obviously only as part of a Calorie controlled diet.
It will not work if you eat a bar of chocolate or an extra bag of chips, plus it is not possible to keep this rate going month by month.
According to the myth most people would end up with no waist at all after around three years. !!!

Myth #2: Hooping for one minute burns as many Calories as running an 8 minute mile !!!

Fact #2: Obviously this is just not possible, it has however been scientifically shown that Hooping can burn as much as 100 Calories in a ten minute period.
It is normally suggested that it is possible to burn between 400 and 600 Calories per hour.
Of course the more practice you have, the better you get at hooping, and the more efficiently you Hoop, therefore the lower the rate at which you burn Calories.

Myth #3: I cannot use that hoop it is too big for me, I need a small one to start with !!!

Fact #3: Actually the bigger the hoop, the easier it is to use, this is because larger hoops move more slowly.  This has caught many people out over the years.  Too often we are only used to seeing small hoops in children's toy shops, and when your new hoop arrives through the post there is often an exclamation of "That hoop you just sent me is too big, can I have a smaller one to start with?"
Of course there are times when a hoop can actually be too big, performing the "Limbo" move with a large hoop can mean that the hoop catches on the floor in use, other times maybe you are trying to hoop indoors and you want to try a smaller hoop so that you do not break all of your ornaments on the mantelpiece. *smiles*
This of course is different to thinking it will be harder to keep a large hoop going.  As a point, for exhibitions, I have a 75 inch hoop I use to demonstrate, and I have even had children using it !!!

Myth #4: Your required Hoop size depends on your height !!!

Fact #4: This again is incorrect.
Basically this is down to the fact that when someone asked what size an adult hoop should be and it was pointed out that "well, my hoop reaches up to my belly button and that works for me"
The size of your hoop is dependant on your waist size, because that is where you "Hoop".
Think about this logically, if one person is 6 feet tall, with a 32 inch waist (dress size 12) and another person is 5 feet tall, with a 38 to 40 inch waist (dress size 18) then obviously the shorter person in this case will need a much bigger hoop than the taller person.

The only time your height has anything to do with the hoop size is when you are doing a "Limbo" type move where a large hoop will hit the floor when you lean over.  For this reason most hoopers use different size hoops for different moves.  Most Hoopers in fact owning several Hoops.
