Should I buy a Hoop or have a go at making my own? You can buy so called "Adult 30 inch hula hoops" from ebay or many high street stores. However, trust me on this, these lightweight 30 inch hoops are of no use to adults.
I recommend at a minimum 36 inch diameter hoop for an adult beginner, Although most adults would probably benefit from starting with a 40 or 42 inch hoop.
Seriously, if you buy a cheap, lightweight hoop you will not be impressed, and you will probably very quickly give up your hooping aspirations feeling that you are a failure when the problem is with the hoop, not with you. So, if you are serious about hooping you need a larger, heavier, stronger, hoop. This would normally be made from either 25mm plastic pipe. (although it could also be made from lighter 20mm pipe if required) There are plenty of details available for making your own hoop on the internet, try www.hooping.org for one such source.
Many people do not like the hassle, or have the tools or skills to make their own Hoop. So, for this reason we make and sell hoops to help spread the joy of hooping. Why are our Hoops so expensive compared to the "toy" hoops?
Our hoops are all hand made, which takes time, they are then decorated, again by hand, in both cases they are crafted using quality materials, and finally there is the cost of postage and packaging. Plus as well as our standard range of hoops we can make your hoop any size you want, and to your specifications, plus we can give you the chance to decide what colour tapes you want the hoop decorating with. So if you want to make your own hoop then please do, however if you cannot be bothered to buy the pipe, and the special connector to join it, plus buying different coloured rolls of tape, and remember it will take you a good 2 hours or so to make your hoop, then you could instead buy one from us.
Whichever you do I suggest you read our section on "Advice for Beginners" and take a look at the different hoop sizes available in our shop.
Thank you for your interest. I hope you enjoy hooping whether you buy from us or not.
Even if you do make your own hoop, I suggest you consider buying an instructional Hooping DVD from us as it is an excellent way to learn hooping and Hoop-Dance for beginners.
