Today's Learning

Welcome to a new school year!  I am looking forward to working with each of you as we study literature and practice reading deeply and writing with clarity and eloquence.

Please open and read the Welcome Letter and Syllabus attached below.

Tuesday  27 October 2009

We took a short reading quiz over yesterday’s reading, “Sure You Can Ask Me a Personal Question.” (See below)

Then we began brainstorming our different roles (voices) and the topics we usually discuss in those roles.  (pages 47 and 48)  We will begin drafting for EA 2 TOMORROW!

“Sure You Can Ask Me a Personal Question”

  1. The speakers in Pat Mora’s “Legal Alien” and Diane Burns’ “Sure You Can Ask Me a Personal Question” deal with the feelings of being a minority in America. How do the speaker’s feelings about being a minority in the first poem compare to the feelings of the speaker in the second poem? Include one detail from each poem to support your answer. (LA06)

  1. Either of these phrases could identify the author’s purpose for writing the poem, “Sure You Can Ask Me a Personal Question”. Choose the phrase you think best describes the author’s purpose for writing it.

    1. To inform about stereotyping
    2. To entertain fellow Native Americans

Support your choice with two details from the poem. (LT08)

Monday  26 October 2009

We read “Sure You Can Ask Me a Personal Question” and completed a SOAPStone analysis (page 46) on the poem.  Then, in our notebooks, we emulated the style of the poem by writing about an issue where people ask us questions that might be stereotypical.  Place this with your vocabulary notebook.

Thursday  22 October 2009

We identified the purpose of different punctuation marks (pg. 35) and then completed a quick write where we chose a punctuation mark to represent ourselves and elaborated on why it would.

In small groups we chose one of the monologues on the following pages  (36 +) to analyze and perform.  We will finish this tomorrow.

************************************

Wednesday  21 October 2009

We completed a short review of the vocabulary we have studied so far this year.

Then, with a partner, we revisited The House on Mango Street.  We choose two vignettes that EITHER: represent the protagonist at different points in her growth/development OR that discuss different things she wants or feels strongly about.

We then discussed and then wrote about why you and your partner chose these vignettes and how each is important to our understanding of Esperanza.

*******************************

Tuesday  20 October 2009

We wrote a response to three different scenarios, each representing a different tone or feeling, one of our many voices.  We then practiced presenting them to a partner. Afterwards, we reflected on the qualities of vocal presentation that communicated the tone and personality to us.
