Honors Sophomore English

Today's Learning

Welcome to a new school year!  I am looking forward to working with each of you as we study literature and practice reading deeply and writing with clarity and eloquence.

Please open and read the Welcome Letter and Syllabus attached below.

Friday  20 November 2009

We began viewing Bend it Like Beckham.  We identified the major characters, conflicts, and discussed how the theatrical elements used by the filmmaker help us understand the story and begin to reveal theme.

*********************************

Thursday  19 November 2009

We viewed three different film clips and practiced analyzing them for theatrical elements and how these elements help us understand the film.

*************************************

Wednesday  18 November 2009

We finished discussing our introduction to satire.  We defined (and wrote in our vocabulary notebooks) the following: oxymoron, hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and imagery.  We then defined theatrical elements and talked about how filmmakers use them in the same way authors use the terms we have defined to make a point and communicate.  We will practice analysis of these theatrical elements tomorrow.

Tuesday  17 November 2009

We defined 'satire'.  Add this to your vocabulary notebook.

We read the essay called "Us and Them" by David Sedaris in our text books.  We then completed the graphic organizer on page 79.

Monday  16 November 2009

We continued viewing and discussing family in art.  We will finish our comparisons on Wednesday.

******************************

Friday  13 November 2009

We defined family.

We read through page 61, a process through which to read art.  We practiced the procedure with several art pieces focusing on culture and family.

*********************************

Thursday  12 November 2009

We finished unpacking EA 2 for unit 2.

In small groups we discussed and then came to a consensus on the definition of “family.”  We discussed how this idea relates and influences our cultural experiences.

******************************

Tuesday  10 November 2009

We took a four question reading assessment.  We also completed our regular vocabulary practice.  Our words this week are estrange and interminable.

*********************************

Monday  9 November 2009

We went over student examples of two point questions for the HSPE.  We analyzed the answers for completeness.  We will complete some sample questions like these tomorrow.

We began unpacking unit 2.

*******************************

Friday  6 November 2009

We took an online end of unit assessment.  We also began looking at examples of 0, 1, or 2 level answers to the reading portion of the High School Proficiency Exam.
