Clean Cities is a voluntary government and industry partnership coordinated by the U.S. Department of Energy ( http://www1.eere.energy.gov/cleancities/). The program is designed to achieve a cleaner environment in major U.S. cities, reduce dependence on imported oil, and stimulate local economies by increasing the use of alternative fuels and alternative fuel vehicles. Over eighty cities and regions in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada have joined.
Honolulu Clean Cities focuses on Hawaii's alternative fuels and vehicles (electric vehicles, LPG (propane), biodiesel, ethanol, and hydrogen). Honolulu received official designation in August, 1995 as the 38th Clean City.
The program is voluntary; organizations participate at whatever level they feel comfortable. For example, agreements between several fleets to use a single alternative fuel refueling site, instead of installing several alternative fuel sites, results in savings for everyone.
Participants are interested in protecting the environment; using and producing clean fuels or vehicles; reducing state and national dependence on imported petroleum; and working together for efficient use of locally-available energy and other resources.
