Vintage & Green

“Green” for me has always meant “recycling the past”, a lifelong passion. A flea market collector from an early age, I share my love of vintage and recycled goods by passing them on to others through booths at antiques malls, participating in and promoting antiques shows, and here through Vintage & Green.

Several years ago I met a gentleman who was doing industrial clean outs. One of the things he had was crates of 1930s mercury glass apothecary bottles. They were stunning and pricey – and what does one do with a case of them? But I later regretted not buying them, and when I ran into him again and asked, he chuckled and told me they had sold like wildfire and were long gone. So when I found these two in my travels, I was delighted. Full of character, patina and charm. Wonderful on a bookshelf, dresser, in a bathroom for a sophisticated vintage look. Stoppers included but not original.

I seem to be on a theme here – or maybe things just find each other. Begin on the left with the Chinese Chippendale faux bamboo iron chair. I was really almost breathless when I found this. Chinese Chippendale is such a classic design element, repeated in so many contemporary pieces we see now. To me this chair is the epitome of the Glam era – gold paint worn away in exactly the right places (this was a very treasured piece!) – graceful curves and extra touches like the corner brackets joining the seat and legs. Dress it up or dress it down. I’m thinking about recovering the cushion in black faux reptile skin. Ooooooh

To the right, a marble top side table with reeded legs, painted-over mahogany most likely, and of that early mid-century period (think Duncan Phyfe). Whoever did the painting made some great choices, as this little table is very chic. I love pieces like this with a lot of versatility – bedside, hallway, living room, bathroom – it’ll make itself right at home. There’s something about brass – timeless yet exotic. Here we have a tall and sophisticated Mid Century brass lamp with original oversized coolie shade – a statement piece with purpose. Who says you can’t mix periods? Eclectic is the name of the game, as far as I’m concerned. This Victorian three-candle stand with glass flowers fits right in – tone and texture pull it together.

This sweet vintage concrete topiary came to me with its surface worn away and in need of restoration to its former glory. Brush, paint – voila! – a masterpiece for your garden!

An iconic vintage concrete garden element – a young girl on a dolphin. Outfitted for use as a fountain, you can use it that way or as is.

He may have originally been a planter as his base appears so designed, but this folky little tin man will look great anywhere you choose. Fabulous character, just waiting for you to make up his story.

Is it proper to say I have a “fetish” for carved Zuni fetish animals? They are such charming representations of the real thing. Occasionally I see them adapted to another use – like this stunning turquoise abstract creature on a long necklace chain (which itself is pretty interesting). One great piece of jewelry can transform you.

I have a friend who likes micro-mosaic jewelry so I always have my eye out for it. My friend told me recently “No more presents!” (Can you imagine???). But I confess, I cannot stop looking for it and buying it – particularly for unusual pieces like this dear micro-mosaic horseshoe. Italian in origin, these glass mosaic beads are the size of a pin head – delicate, intricate works of art.

I had a friend who recently passed away. I adored her, not only because she was a wonderful woman, but also she was an icon of style. Her effortless sophistication was enhanced by her ingenious creativity. One of my favorites was her taking one of these small Victorian mesh purses and putting it on a chain to wear as a necklace. It was so natural one thought it was meant to be worn that way. Stunning.

There's more to come but have to run now! Look for great finds like a fabulous Italian Mid-Century tole lemon tree lamp!

Until then, perhaps a stroll through Firehouse Antique Center in Galena, where there's always a great selection of quality pieces - whatever your style!
