June 2011: The Board of Directors of Home Based Learners of Nova Scotia has decided to allow its status as a non profit society to lapse and to cease operating under the Nova Scotia Societies Act. It has been our privilege to serve our membership over the past six years. Our website will continue to provide home education information until October 2011. We strongly encourage home educators in Nova Scotia to become members of the Nova Scotia Home Education Association (NSHEA) which is currently the only province- wide non profit society registered under the the Nova Scotia Societies Act. NSHEA is the provincial "voice at the table" protecting the rights of home educators in dealing with the Nova Scotia Department of Education. http://www,nshea.ca We also encourage home educators to seek out and become involved with local support groups such as those listed on our website. Home Based Learners of Nova Scotia (HBLNS) is a non-profit society incorporated in April 2005 under the Nova Scotia Societies Act. Our Memorandum of Association states that the objective of the society is to gather and share information to support our belief in the the right of Nova Scotians to educate their children at home. Our mission is to endeavour to protect the rights of parents in Nova Scotia to educate their children at home with no mandatory testing and with the least intrusive government reporting requirements. In accomplishing this objective our group will work towards the following goals: 1) To monitor the law and policy in Nova Scotia and the rest of Canada, in a systematic, regular way, to ensure that our home education rights are protected. 2) To provide networking opportunities for members through the development and maintenance of an internet website dedicated to sharing information about home education 3) To work to promote a positive image of home education. Home Based Learners of Nova Scotia is an inclusive group, without religious affiliation, which encourages mutual respect for different home education philosophies. We support the right of parents to educate their children at home following the method(s) that the family has chosen. As a provincial organization, we realize that the diversity of Nova Scotian home educating families makes it impossible for this group to provide support services. Accordingly, we believe that local support groups will be more involved in serving day-to-day home education needs. The function of HBLNS will be to monitor and influence legislation and to maintain a vibrant website which will serve as a clearinghouse for information and a connection for home educating families and their local support groups.
