When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, “I used everything you gave me.” -Erma Bombeck IN-SCHOOL VOLUNTEERS ROOM PARENT K – 5 grade parties are as follows: Christmas, Valentine’s Day (Kindergarten combines this with Grandparent’s Day), and at the end of the year Kindergarten has a “Celebration Day.” The teachers have these parties and ceremonies down to a science; know how long they should last and what kinds of activities work well with their age group. Also, each grade is responsible for weeding/mulching the tree that they planted in 1st grade. We need Room Parents who can help coordinate our children’s class parties and check in periodically with the teachers to see if anything is needed in the classrooms. If class projects are made for the Mardi Gras Live Auction, we will need our Room Parents to assist in completing these projects. In addition, a Room Representative Coordinator is needed to assist the teacher in coordinating and organizing the Room Parents and an Assistant to the Room Parent is needed to help the Room Parent plan and organize.
PLAYGROUND WATCH Our children are so very fortunate to have such a wonderful playground, but no matter how safe we try and make it, things do happen and children sometimes get hurt. That’s why we need more eyes and ears to help our teachers make sure it is as safe and fun as possible. Each year, we ask parents who have been fingerprinted and have taken the Protecting God’s Children program, to volunteer to help watch the children at recess between 11:30 - 11:50 am. Tagalongs are welcome!
CLASSROOM Our teachers can always use any extra time you can share with them and the children love to see their parents in the classroom. If you would like to help in your child’s classroom, please indicate the grade and day(s) you can volunteer. H&S compiles this information for our teachers and gives them their completed list of helpers. Also, your name will be given to the Room Parent, so you can be notified to assist with classroom events.
CAFETERIA The cafeteria staff needs volunteers to help serve hot lunch. This is a great way for parents, grandparents, and friends of the students to get involved. But more importantly, the children enjoy seeing a face from home in the cafeteria. The approximate time needed to serve hot lunch is 10:50 - 11:50 am. A FREE lunch is offered to your child on the day that you volunteer! Sorry, no tagalongs during this volunteer time.
FUNDRAISING VOLUNTEERS
SCHOOL MERCHANDISE This project is a service to the students and raised $597.14 last school year. Thanks to the talents of one of our 1st grade mothers, St. Bernadette School has a new school logo for our student and adult t-shirts! This year will also have drawstring bags and water bottles for students to purchase. Both of these items include a designated area for your child to write his/her name and will display our logo in white for the bags and in navy for the water bottles. The “Bee” remains our school mascot and can be found on our car magnets that you can opt to purchase as well! A School Merchandise Coordinator is needed to order and to sell merchandise during various school events. MARDI GRAS
Oh, what a night! What a special night…St. B’s largest fundraiser is an evening of family FUN! Our carnival is in celebration of “Fat Tuesday” prior to the beginning of Lent. Last year’s Mardi Gras raised nearly $20,000 for our school! A Mardi Gras Chair, Co-Chair, Auction Chair, and Auction Co-Chair are needed to organize this important fundraiser. Many volunteers are needed to pull off this evening of entertainment, live and silent auctions, Kaleidoscope’s games, Teacher Treasures and Classroom Creations, food, and dancing! We need volunteers in all areas, so each family is responsible for helping out!
SCRIP You purchase a gift certificate to a store or restaurant (Kroger, Donatos, Lands End, Speedway, Office Max, Gap to name a few) listed on an order form, and your family’s tuition account and St. B’s will earn a percentage of your purchase. (The percentages earned will be listed next to each item.) And there is NO service charge! Once you receive your certificates you spend them like cash. All grocery store gift certificates as well as an expanding offering of retail gift certificates are eligible for tuition credit. This program offers a great way to get friends and family involved to help pay your family’s tuition! SCRIP is a vital program to Home & School…last year’s profits totaled nearly $22,000! SCRIP will be sold at church after weekend masses and at school on Mondays. A SCRIP Coordinator is needed to place orders for and to distribute certificates, as well as to keep accurate bookkeeping for all the SCRIP-related tuition and H&S accounts. A SCRIP Financial Coordinator is needed to assist in the bookkeeping aspects of the program and a SCRIP Inventory Coordinator is needed to assist with the inventory aspects of the program. Additional volunteers are needed to help process the orders on Monday, fill orders on Wednesday, and sell SCRIP after mass on the weekends.
EARNING FOR LEARNING The "Earning for Learning Program" at River Valley Mall starts August 29th and runs until October 2nd this year. Local schools can win $1200 per week, so help us earn up to $6000 for our school during this 5-week competition! (Last year we won the first place prize, $4000!) Shop and dine to earn points for our school by saving your receipts. Shop on Mondays and Tuesdays of each week and receive double points! There is a bin marked "Earning for Learning" located in the school's entryway where you can turn in your receipts, or you can take them to the River Valley Mall Management office near the JCPenney entrance. Please encourage family and friends to purchase items such as clothes, food, movies, eyeglasses, tires, appliances, etc. during these dates at the mall. The Earning for Learning Coordinator is needed to provide families with information regarding the program and to turn receipts into the mall office. TARGET GUEST CARDS
Sign up for the guest card at Target’s Customer Service Desk, designate our school using our code, 14047, and we earn 1% from your purchases just for using it! If you already have a Target Guest Card and would like to participate in this program, call 1-800-316-6142 to designate St. Bernadette School. If you don’t like the idea of having a credit card, please know that you can pay off your charges immediately at the Service Desk and we still earn our 1% of your purchases. Last year we received over $500 from Target! The Community Stores Coordinator is needed to provide occasional information and updates to families for fundraising at Target. MEIJER COMMUNITY REWARDS
Apply for a Meijer Community Card at Meijers. Our St. Bernadette number is 733374. Use your card for food, clothing, toys, jewelry, housewares, hardware, and shop 24 hours a day – 7 days a week. St. B’s will automatically receive a percentage of your purchase totals which will be applied to our H&S fundraising goals. Applications are available in the school office. We received $108.40 last year with your help! The Community Stores Coordinator is needed to provide information and occasional updates to families for fundraising at Meijer.
GIANT EAGLE’S APPLES FOR THE STUDENTS PROGRAM H&S participates in Giant Eagle’s Apples for the Students program. Just register your Giant Eagle Advantage Card with St. Bernadette School by calling 1-800-474-4777 or by registering online at www.gianteagle.com. Our St. B School number is 5424. Encourage your relatives to register their Giant Eagle Advantage Cards as well! Just by shopping for groceries last year, our school was able to order valuable school equipment and supplies! The Community Stores Coordinator is needed to provide information and occasional updates to families for fundraising at Giant Eagle.
BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION An easy fundraiser! Clip your specially marked “Box Tops” from General Mills Cereals/Snacks and drop them in our Box Top bin in the school entrance. We receive 10 cents for each cereal box top and 10 cents for each snack box top. It may not seem like much, but our school received $1,772.83 this past year from Box Tops alone! Also, they will accept expired ones as well, so don’t throw them away! A Box Tops for Education Coordinator is needed to collect and submit Box Tops for fundraising.
CAMPBELL’S LABELS Just clip and drop off your labels in our Campbell’s bin in the school entrance. At the end of the school year, we count all the labels/points and choose anything from software to gym equipment, depending on the number of points we have accumulated. So on those cold, blustery days eat lots of soup! A Campbell’s Soup Labels Coordinator is needed to collect and to submit labels for fundraising.
COMMUNITY RESTAURANTS Can we eat out tonight? In the past couple of years, H&S has participated in a fun and simple fundraiser at Bob Evans restaurant! Just by eating a meal out or by using the carry-out services at Bob Evans, H&S earned $204.00! This year we are hoping to earn 15% of the profits from Bob Evans, Max & Erma’s, and Pizza Cottage. It’s really that simple! A Community Restaurants Coordinator is needed to organize the date and times with the local restaurants and to distribute informational fliers to school families, parishioners, and school staff.
CRISTY’S PIZZA Who doesn’t love pizza?! Last year our Cristy’s Pizza fundraiser event brought in $1210.00 to our H&S Association! Simply pay $20 for a Cristy’s pizza card, which gives you six stickers for buy one large pizza and get the second large pizza FREE! This is a huge $78 savings! You can use as many of the stickers as you want for each purchase at Cristy’s Pizza. These cards make great gifts and are a super savings for sporting events, birthday parties, and other large celebrations! A Cristy’s Pizza Coordinator is needed to provide information about the fundraiser to families and to coordinate the selling of the pizza cards throughout the school year.
ENRICHMENT VOLUNTEERS
HEALTH EDUCATION Teaching our children tools for healthy living is always a focus throughout the school year! With the Jump Rope for Your Heart program already in place, H&S will be featuring more health-related topics, such as dental health care, exercise, healthy food, etc. We are fortunate at St. B’s to have many families in medical and dental professions, so we will be tapping into those family resources for health-related presentations for our student body. A Health Education Coordinator is needed to organize health-related information for our families, students, and staff. ARBOR DAY
In 1994, we started an Arboretum on the side of the parish hall. Each class planted a tree to represent their own particular class, so they could watch it grow as they grew at St. B’s. Every year on Arbor Day, the last Friday in April, the entire school participates in a ceremony and the 1st grade class plants a tree of their own. We need two parent volunteers from 1st grade to plan this ceremony and to coordinate spring clean up so that the school grounds will be ready for Arbor Day.
ST. NICK CELEBRATION Every year at the beginning of December we get a special visit from St. Nick. He meets with all the children in church at 8:30 am, explains his origin and gives each child a symbolic candy cane at they exit the church. Afterwards, the children and staff leave their shoes in the hallway and St. Nick fills them with goodies! He always needs a little help with the goodies – after all, St. Nick is 1,700 years old! A St. Nick Day Coordinator is needed to organize this celebration and additional volunteers are needed to assist the coordinator in organizing this event.
MINI-SCHOOL Mini-School is an optional after-school program where parents and local professionals teach classes using their skills or interests and is available to all grades (K-5). Classes are held on Fridays in the spring and are generally 45 minutes in duration. It is intended to be an “extra” learning opportunity for the children at St. B’s, one in which they will enjoy and be able to gain knowledge in an area they would not normally have access to in the classroom setting. Once classes have been set, a list of those classes and a registration form will be sent home with each child. If you are interested in teaching a class, have a talent you’re willing to share or would like to help supervise, please let us know. A Mini-School Coordinator and Co-Coordinator are needed to organize these enrichment sessions. Additional parent volunteers are needed and at least one fingerprinted adult will be needed to help with each session. (A parent must accompany Kindergarten participants.)
COSI ON WHEELS This program involves the entire student body. COSI comes directly to our school, sets up and spends the day providing an educational, fun program filled with activities for our children. Each class will go separately to the program, which will be adapted to meet the needs of each individual grade level. Two COSI on Wheels Coordinators are needed to organize this event. An additional 30 volunteers are needed for the entire day to help with all the activities. We need at least four very strong people to help tear down at the end of the day. Sorry, no tagalongs allowed at this program.
FOCUS ON FAMILY VOLUNTEERS
FAMILY NEWSLETTER H&S creates a monthly newsletter to provide a more personal peek into what is happening at the school. This one-page resource may feature a special class project, provide helpful websites on parenting, suggest ideas for bringing the Catholic faith home, and share favorite recipes from other St. B parents! A Monthly Newsletter Coordinator is needed to compile information into a one-page, newsletter format on a monthly basis.
WELCOMING COMMITTEE Entering a new school is an exciting and sometimes overwhelming experience! Our H&S Association would like to ease the transition for new families by providing them with practical information throughout the school year. A Welcoming Committee Coordinator is needed to coordinate a tour of the school during our Parent Information Night and to organize additional volunteers who are interested in providing information to new families via telephone or e-mail. CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK
This is held the last week in January. Everyday the school plans something special to honor our community, parishioners, parents, staff and the students. There is also a day during the week when the entire family can get together at school and share lunch with their children. Parents bring takeout or home cooked meals, decorations for the table, centerpieces, candles, etc… It is very festive no matter what you bring, a lot of fun, and it means the world to these children to have their families with them on this day! On one morning of the week, H&S provides a light breakfast for our faculty and staff, plus an appreciation luncheon for them on another day of the week. A Catholic Schools Week Coordinator is needed to organize the breakfast and appreciation luncheon. During the luncheon, we need extra volunteers to watch the children in the lunchroom and on the playground, so the entire staff can enjoy their meal together.
FALL HARVEST The party date is set for the month of October and we will have a celebration with a DJ, food, and games! Children (as well as parents) may come in their Halloween costumes! The party is a lot of fun for all involved, allowing all of our parents to get to know each other early on in the school year. A Fall Harvest Chair and Co-Chair are needed to organize this event. We need parent volunteers to help organize it, work in the kitchen and clean up, but remember this will not be difficult to pull off. It’s a festive get-together!
FATHER-DAUGHTER DANCE Swing your partner round and round! Last year the H&S Association sponsored a western themed father-daughter dance for our girls, preschool – 5th grade. The daddys and daughters learned to square dance, munched on goodies, and posed for a keepsake western photo. It is important that every girl feel included; therefore, we encourage St. B girls to bring a male relative or a special adult friend, if dad can’t make it. Two Father-Daughter Dance Coordinators are needed to organize this event. YEEHAW!
MOTHER-SON EVENT It just wouldn’t seem right to have a father-daughter event without having a mother-son event! Last year the H&S Association sponsored a carnival-themed mother-son fun night with games, snacks, and goofy photos! There was even a bit of dancing taking place! It is important that every boy feel included; therefore, we encourage St. B boys to bring a female relative or a special adult friend, if mom can’t make it. What a great opportunity for all of our St. B Dads to volunteer! A Mother-Son Event Coordinator and Co-Coordinator are needed to organize this event.
UNIFORM EXCHANGE Need uniform items? Need to get rid of uniform items? Every summer in early August a uniform exchange is set-up on a table in the school entryway. Feel free to drop off the gently used garments that your child has outgrown and pick up the next size for your child. Help yourself to any/all items that your family needs! A Uniform Exchange Coordinator is needed to organize the uniforms and to inform parents of the exchange dates.
SERVICE VOLUNTEERS
PUBLIC RELATIONS Our students are blessed with many learning experiences and family-fun events! Throughout the school year, we like to share with our community some of the exciting and meaningful projects and events that our students and staff are involved in. Two PR Coordinators are needed to collaborate with the St. B staff and event coordinators to write and to submit articles and pictures to The Catholic Times, The Eagle Gazette, and The Towne Crier.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH In an effort to help those who are in need in our Lancaster community, the H&S Association will be coordinating efforts with local social service agencies in order to assist with some of their needs. Specifically, H&S will be partnering with the Lutheran Social Services Food Pantry on Main Street to provide non-perishable food items to the impoverished in our community. For example, the admission “fee” for our Fall Harvest celebration might involve a loaf of bread. By helping those who are in need in our community, we will be teaching our children how to serve others and how to be compassionate towards families who are experiencing economic hardships. A Community Outreach Coordinator is needed to collaborate with local social service agencies to provide items in need. Additional volunteers are needed to help transport items to local social service agencies.
TEACHER APPRECIATION Throughout the school year, it is important for us to recognize our dedicated and committed staff at St. Bernadette School. For example, during our Parent Information Night, H&S presents the staff with “welcome back to school” gifts. A Teacher Appreciation Coordinator is needed to purchase gifts for the staff throughout the school year and to assist in organizing any teacher appreciation-related events. H&S BULLETIN BOARD
Take notice of the large H&S bulletin board to your left as you walk in the school entrance! Each month we like to decorate the bulletin board for upcoming events or holidays. The monthly theme for the bulletin board is discussed at the previous month’s H&S meeting. We also have a smaller bulletin board to the left of the larger bulletin board. The smaller bulletin board is used for providing important H&S information, such as the next meeting date/time, SCRIP news, and any other current H&S announcements. The H&S officers are responsible for coordinating the information that is on the small bulletin board, but we need volunteers to decorate our large bulletin board! Volunteers for the large bulletin board will be recruited during our H&S meetings or by way of Thursday Notes. ADOPT-A-ROAD
We are thankful to the staff at St. Bernadette for keeping the school so well maintained. As parents, we felt we should do our part and decided to take over Adopt-A-Road. This means cleaning up the debris/trash along Wheeling Rd., which we are required to do at least twice per school year. Only the 5th graders can take part in the clean up considering the area to be covered. A police officer or deputy must be present during the clean up. Adopt-A-Road volunteers are needed to help the 5th grade class with this clean-up in the fall and in the spring.
FALL/SPRING CLEAN-UP The 5th grade class needs help in the fall and in the spring to care for our Arboretum, which we adopted as part of our stewardship program. The clean-up involves weeding, mulching, and planting flowers. In following years, each class is responsible for weeding/mulching their tree as long as they are at St. B’s. Fall/Spring Clean-up volunteers are needed to help the 5th grade class with this project. RECYCLING
Drop off your batteries, ink cartridges, or Capri Sun juice pouches in our designated bins at our school entrance. You can also drop off your recyclables at the Community Action Center, and ask them to credit St. Bernadette. With the cessation of curbside recycling, this is a great way to help our school and Earth. A Recycling Coordinator is needed to collect the school’s various recycling items and to take or mail them to their designated recycling centers.
CHRISTMAS WISH LIST H&S loves to provide classroom supplies and/or personal gift items to our dedicated staff. The teachers would love to have these “teacher’s treasures,” which both your child and teacher can enjoy! The children will have fun helping you bring this much-needed gift to their classroom! Please deliver before Christmas break. A Christmas Wish List Coordinator is needed to organize this gift-giving project. ST. BERNADETTE SCHOOL DIRECTORY
Our parents and staff look forward to receiving this every year because it has enabled them to better communicate with each other, which is one of our main goals! We would like to include in this booklet our parents and all the children, the schools your children attend, their grade levels, and the phone numbers, addresses, and e-mail addresses of our school families. Advertisement space will once again be available. The entire school will see your ad and it directly benefits you and the children! The cost will stay the same: $40 for a whole page, $25 for a half, and $10 for a business card size. A School Directory Coordinator is needed to compile all of the contact information and to organize the printing of the directories. A School Directory Advertising Assistant is needed to help the School Directory Coordinator solicit and organize ads for the directory. RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE
Every year as part of Catholic Schools Week, the H&S Association collaborates with the Red Cross to set-up a blood drive in the Mary Good Center, which is located in the church office. It is obvious that volunteers are needed to donate blood! A Red Cross Coordinator is needed to organize the event date and to schedule appointments for potential blood donors.
ST. BERNADETTE SCHOOL YEARBOOK Once the design and layout of the yearbooks is complete, LifeTouch will put it all together for us. The cost will be approximately $15 per book, dependant upon the number of pages we want included and the number of orders received. We will not receive extra copies, so be sure to get your order placed during the yearbook sale. This is not a fundraiser, just memories put together for our children to look back on in years to come. We need volunteers to take pictures throughout the school year and one volunteer from each class to help coordinate the pictures. In addition, a St. Bernadette Yearbook Coordinator is needed to organize, design, and order the yearbooks. |
