"The Road to Auschwitz" took nearly a year to create. It has been used in middle school and high school classrooms, altered, updated and taught again - always striving to make it better. In addition we consciously make sure that this lesson is supported by the USHMM's Guidelines for Teaching the Holocaust. These guidelines are as follows, and those in BOLD are the guidelines that we believe this particular lesson satisfies:
1. Define the term "Holocaust."
2. Just because it happened does not mean that it was inevitable.
3. Avoid simple answers to complex questions.
4. Strive for precision of language.
5. Strive for balance in establishing whose perspective informs your study of the Holocaust.
6. Avoid comparisons of pain.
7. Do not romanticize history.
8. Contextualize the history.
9. Translate statistics into people.
10. Make responsible methodological choices.
Below you will find all the documents (in DOC & PDF formats) that you will need to teach this particular lesson EXCEPT our packets. We did not include the packets for two reasons... First, they were TOO BIG to upload. Sorry. Second, it is very important that YOU find images that are appropriate to your classroom & students. Search the photo archives @ www.ushmm.org to find your own images. Still, if you do want to use ours we have thumbnails - with photo numbers - of each photo in the "Packet for Presentation" and copies of the images in the "PP [PowerPoint] for Presentations 2009."
Again, feel free to contact any of us for questions! Good luck!
