H. M. King High School
Kingsville,Texas lies deep in the fabled Wild Horse Desert, the once-disputed territory between the Rio Grande and Nueces River where Captain Richard King started the legendary King Ranch in 1853. Founded fifty-two years after King's death by his rancher-philanthropist widow, Henrietta María King, historic Kingsville opened its first post office and welcomed its first train on July 4, 1904. Mrs. King also donated land for many schools and churches in the area "so that a community would rise up out of that wild horse desert and not just a railroad stop."* The centerpiece of Mrs. King's legacy was the landmark school that bears her name, Henrietta M. King High. Designed to pay tribute to Texas history, its façade incorporates architectural features from the state's four Spanish Missions.

H.M. King High School is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark.
Currently unoccupied, the old school is slated to become Kingsville City Hall
Although a new school has since been built, the original is ever in our hearts. We are eternally grateful to Mrs. King, whose generosity enabled us to experience a level of culture and education rarely available in small towns.
The Class of '61
Ever since Gerald Boyer started rounding us up in 1997, over 40 members of the Class of '61 have been communicating online as HMK61—first at eGroups/Yahoo!, where early posts are still archived, and now at Google. Everyone who has ever been part of the class—from first grade on and regardless of when, where, or whether s/he graduated—is invited to join us at http://groups.google.com/group/HMK61. Relatives are welcome, too!
* Many thanks to Sally Kleberg, Class of 1962, for sharing information about her great-great-grandmother.
