ABOUT THE INSTITUTE The Institute for Historical Study is a community of scholars with a passion for history in its many forms. We share research, ideas, and practical advice and provide a public forum for the discussion of history.
The Institute stimulates interaction between independent scholars, university faculty, and retired or semi-retired academics interested in a wide range of historical fields.
Our aims are to promote:
the study and discussion of history outside the traditional classroom setting and in the broader public arena
research and writing of high quality and integrity
scholarship not only in areas of traditional historical focus but in areas that have been largely unexplored
The Institute for Historical Study is affiliated with the National Coalition of Independent Scholars, the American Historical Association, and the National Coalition for History.
Most members of the Institute live in the San Francisco Bay Area. Meetings and events take place in the East Bay, San Francisco, the Peninsula and South Bay, and Marin County.
