Hirst Wood Regeneration

Home

Hirst Wood is a community of just over 600 households to the west of Shipley and Saltaire in West Yorkshire. It is an area surrounded by great natural beauty, including the Leeds-Liverpool canal and the semi-ancient woodland that gave the area its name.

When asked what they like best about living in Hirst Wood, 37 per cent of people cited the woods, the canal and surrounding countryside.

Hirst Wood Regeneration Group (HWRG) was set up early in 2000 with the aim of improving facilities in the neighbourhood, especially for children and young people, and building a sense of pride in our community

The biggest success so far has been the opening of the playground off Hirst Lane which took four years' campaigning and fund raising. It has proved a big success it has been enhanced this year with the opening of a new all-weather sports area for our older youngsters.

The group meets monthly at Vicars in Victoria Road, Saltaire thanks to Rev Andy Bowerman and his wife. The meetings are run informally and last no more than two hours everyone is welcome to come along and have his or her say.

Topics can range from how to deal with the curse of dog muck to planning a family fun day, from car parking and rat running to the local bus service. In other words anything and everything, no matter how big or small, that concerns the people of Hirst Wood.

If you are interested in what happens in Hirst Wood, please come along to any of our meetings. Details are on The Community Noticeboard by the children's playground.

You will be made very welcome.

------- Our next meeting is Tuesday 10 November at  7.30 pm at Vicars, Victoria Road -------
