Game Recaps - Coaches Notes
9/9 vs Scituate WIN 2-0!! - Captains Chippari & Ruggiero
A great start to what I feel is going to be a tremendously exciting season!
We arrived to a field a little frazzled due to the mix up with the field assignments but we got right into game mode lead by elected game captains Julia Chippari & Abby Ruggiero. Both players stood out during tryouts and practice last week by their great show of effort and leadership.
Chippari volunteered to play goal first half. She did an excellent job making some nice saves and keeping the team spirited and on their toes with her encouraging field banter.
The game started at slow pace as we found our positions on the field. Right away I noticed Higham's skill advantage. The play remained mostly in the middle of the field however it was clear Hingham had stronger boots and better ball skill that would eventually lead us to their zone.
Kate Freda got us off to a great start with a goal in the first half. It was a nice shot the squeaked by Scituate's goalie.
Then later in the game Elle Barrett scored on a ball assisted by Lizzie McLaughlin. Elle took a shot which the goalie saved but didn't get great control of and that's when Elle saw the opportunity to score.
Aine Tracy hopped in goal in the second half. For someone who hesitated at the notion of playing goal she did an excellent job thwarting Scituate's attempts at a comeback. She made several saves and faced a direct kick within goal scoring range, a penalty shot, and a last minute goal attempt.
Not one shot got by her.
I felt we did a great job defensively all over the field. Isabelle Kelly, Grace Baggott, Caitlin Ryan, Anna Criscitiello, Elizabeth Britt, and Alicia Barry did a great job defending our zone while players on the wings and in midfield positions helped move the ball up for scoring opportunities.
Let's work on moving the ball up and crossing the ball to utilize all of the field. Let's spread out and show our next opponent how well we communicate and just how great the 2011 Hingham Freshman Girls team is!!!
Watch out Sandwich!!!
9/12 vs Sandwich WIN 3-1!! - Captains Tracy & Baggott
A nice follow up match to out first game!
What a great game - though I think Sandwich might not feel the same. The minute Hingham hit the field - it was pass-pass-pass-pass. Beautiful passing girls. I wonder if our quick game of 3v1 right before the game start got you into the passing mind set. It looked great out there. You girls seemed to really connect with one another and were able to dominate from start to finish.
Captains Aine & Grace got the girls ready leading warm ups and cheers. We raced out to the field and were ready to go. Chippari dutifully took the net though she only had to make one save the entire first half. Her presence in net was felt as she cheered on the amazing defense crew. I loved how the defense was able to play more of an offense driven game. They got right up into the Sandwich zone and made beautiful crosses to clear the ball and to drive the ball up to the middies and forwards. EXCELLENT. Just what we talked about last game.
Also - Middies did an excellent job of keeping the game moving when the ball went out of bounds. There were ready with the throws in which usually put us into a good scoring position. Ali Hill did an excellent job of playing the game aggressively and smart! Great work!
With some minor adjustments it seemed we found space on the field and were able to maintain possession for most of the game. We had incredible passing and some great shots on goal.
Emily MacDonald started us out with out first goal. She took a shot on goal that went wide however and ill-positioned Sandwich player deflected the ball into her own net. A great example of that fact that it is good to take advantage of all scoring opportunities and NEVER NEVER face your body towards the net when you are defending.
Our 1-0 lead made us hungry for another. Sarah Brennan delivered with a beauty of a shot from the right corner. It was picture-post card perfect.
Aine and Margot each made some great shots on goal - though Margot's second shot really should have counted as a goal since the goalie made the save over the line. It was a good catch by the Sandwich player on a ball served by Margot but it was most definitely a goal and I credited Miss Margot!!
In the second half Anna gave us a comfortable lead with a deflected ball that was placed beautifully in the net. Nice going Anna.
A great game girls. I am really proud. We dominated both offensively and defensively this game.
Isabelle Kelly suggested we work on decreasing the amount of touches in front of the goal for next game. I totally agree. We will work on that. Remember our Power/Finesse drill - yeah let's work on that. We will make her proud in our game against W-H tomorrow.
Best wishes to Emily Jenkins. She had a great game today and I hope her ankle is healing well tonight!! And thanks for Lizzie Mc for stepping up to play goal for the second a half. You did a great job Lizzie! Also excellent throw-ins today!
And Kate Freda and Anna C. did some great corner kicks. Emily J. almost put one in for us! Keep it up! Until tomorrow... vs. Whitman Hansen.
9/13 vs Whitman Hanson Loss 1-3. Captains Ali Hill & Isabelle Kelly
A tough competitor but we'll get next time!
Since Ive been a coach in Hingham Whitman Hanson has always been the team to beat. They have great passing and communication and several strong players. I knew this game might be a tricky one for us.
Once the game got underway I felt energy was down for both sides. I didn't see the fight that we had for our first two games. The game was played mostly in the air. There were a lot of long passes creating a sort of ping pong match between the stoppers and sweepers on opposing sides.
Chippari started out in net once again and made some great saves. Defense did a good job keeping the pressure on WH players however there seemed to be a big gap in the middle of the field for most of the game. WH was able to get free from our defenders and take some great shots. Most shots were blocked by Chippari in the first half but WH first goal come from a break away from a speedy forward. Once the WH forward got by our defense she was able to make a fake to the right and take a nice low, left corner shot. There wasn't much we could do accept make better coverage in the field.
Captain Isabelle suggested that on WH throw-ins in our zone that we cover the net inside of the players crowding the sidelines. A great suggestion and a great tactic we can use to get a goal of our own! Let's remember that!!
At the half the score was 1-0. I thought for sure we could make acome back. We have a great team that has tremendous soccer skills. We just may need to find tune some positions and passes. I saw a lot of good things and tons of great ideas - but we may need to take more shots and cut down on the number of small passes in front of the net. Also - we need to pass with purpose. We made a lot of turn overs due to some shady small passes that were kicked out of bounds and were not really necessary. Let's try to keep strong possession of the ball and spread out.
Margot took the net in the second half and made many saves. She did an excellent job and was busy as energy for both teams seemed to pick up. The second WH goal came from a a direct kick. It was an out of reach shot that would have been tough to save.
Sister Anna headed up to center forward position along with Chippari. Chippari made a great attempt on the goal but the shot was saved. Even though there was a lot of goalie shifting on WH's team - every goalie seemed to be pretty good.
Later in the half Anna got a got a great goal (her second of the season) decreasing out deficit. But we were unable to make the come back I think we deserved.
Girls - you did a good job. WH is a good competitor and they pointed us to some things we can work on. I think when we face them again - we will be ready and we will win! Good game everyone!
9/16 vs Plymouth South Loss 1-2. Captains - Emily Jenkins and Sarah Brennan
Let's start with what I Loved about this game --
1. Grace's goal. It was beautiful. We had been in PS's zone the ENTIRE second half - out in front of the net, taking several shots, none of which we were able to get in until... the ball was passed from the right side of the field in front of the net and Grace had no hesitation and placed it right in the left left pocket. Great Goal Gracie!!!
2. I also loved the energy on the side lines. After the half it was clear to me that you were a team, that you were all into the game, and that you wanted to win. I saw you guys come together. I heard you girls cheering each other on. I saw you supporting one another on and off the field. I sw everyone on their feet, yelling, and clapping and wanting so bad to win. We need more of that and I expect it every game - no matter the score. I remember seeing Allie Bieling jumping up and down shouting for a goal, the frustration in Caity Ryan's face as our win slipped away, Ali Hill screeching for a win. That is what we need. We need to want it. First half I heard conversations about hair thickness and homework but in the second half we were only focused on our team and that is what we need to do!
3. I loved the compliments we received form the PS players and the ref. The PS players were VERY physical which is usually the result of lack of skills. The PS players told our players that we were the first team that did not insult them and call them bad names. WE would never do that. That is why Hingham High School received the Sportmanship award! You are such nice girls and I love coaching all of you. We were also told by the ref that we were a much better team. That is nice to hear because you are a great team and you should know that! I think every team we have played has said something nice about us. : )
4. The weather - it was awesome.
-----
Okay what I didn't like as much.
1. The long drive and the fact that we didn't get a good chance to warm up. We need to like race out of the bus and get going with our warm up so that we are ready for the game with pumped up energy.
2. That Emily couldn't play and now had a huge boot on her leg : ... (
3. That Julia may have broken her finger : .... (
4. That we made 5 million shots on net and couldn't get them in. : .... (
5. That the ref blew his whistle (alot) and made weird hand gestures that we didn't understand.
6. That the goals in the first half were not really good earned goals - one by charging our goalie and one by a weird deflection off one of our players (though it was good of them to take advantage of that).
7. That you guys tried so hard in the second half and were unable to come away with a win.
So - we know what we have to do. Practice shots that go into the net, keep the energy up, get right into the game every game, cheer for each other, and continue to be nice, sweet girls.
On monday we have another long drive. Let's make sure that when we get off the bus that we are ready to play!! And let's beat Sandwich and become "like butter" once again (Right Jessie).
9/19 vs Sandwich Win 2-1 Captains Ryan & Bieling
After a very long, loud, and smelly ride we arrived in Sandwich ready and roaring to go! We got onto the field and it was all business. We got to passing, shooting, and headers right away with the very little time we were given to warm up. Great job girls! We were led by Caity & Allie chosen to be captains this week for their mental and emotional game winning spirit that they bring with them to every game - no matter the outcome.
I loved this game. I loved it because we were down in the first half 1-0 and we came back to win it - as we should have. I felt that Hingham definitely had more touches and more control of the ball this game. Our passing was once again - excellent. I also felt we used a lot more space. We were spread out and we kept the ball moving up the wings. I also thought we were more aggressive in our ball approach. If Sandwich had the ball or if there was a 50-50 we stepped up and took it away.
And out game spirit was alive. We were on our feet cheering and focused. We need that every game. IT really helps the people on the field and it helps ready you to get in the game if you are on the sidelines. You shoudl all be observing the whos who of the other team and looking for weakness.
Sandwich definitely improved since the last time we faced them. They had a few very good players that were speedy and had good boots. We realized who they were right away and in the 2nd half made a point to deny them of the ball.
Margot and Abby shared goal tending duties this week with Julia out with a wonky finger. Margot had some unbelievable saves in the first half. Great job Margot! Abby had a quieter half but she made some great saves as well and her presense in the goal was felt. She also did a great job in the first half as center mid.
The goals - Anna had a great goal in the 2nd half. She got a nice pass from Emily right in the center and she cooling dribbled it by the defneders and to a nice easy shot in the corner.
Kate Freda pulled us ahead with what she called a bad corner kick attempt. The defenders passed off responsible to the goalie and the goalie wasn't able to grab it. Maybe not her usually "field goal -like corner kicks but we will take a nice ball that rolls into the goal anytime.
I thought Julia did an excellent job on the field in right forward. She set up nice plays and had great field positon during corners.
Lizzie did an excellent job in mid and forward. And their was no backing down for Ali Hill. She did an excellent job playing defensively yet contributing offensively as well.
I also loved that when I told people what to do - they listened. Alicia and Lily added great pressure on the wings when Sandwich had the ball. Adding that pressure frazzles the person with the ball forcing them to make quick decisions that some are not ready for.
Excellent game - let's bring what we learned to Pembroke today! Also - let's make sure we strech before and after the game. No more injuries! You guys are playing waayyyyy too hard to simply walk off the field without properly stretching!
9/20 vs Pembroke Win 2-0!! Captains McLaughlin & Criscitiello
A great followup to yesterday's game in Sandwich!
This game was full of energy. I felt everyone on our team worked hard and did their best. We hit the field ready to play and ready to fight for the ball! Within the first ten minutes it was clear that we were ready to win.
Pembroke did a good of making us work for this win and their goalie made some great saves. We had a lot more shots on net. Many very close calls.
Our first goal came in the first half on a nice pass from Emily Raso. She was playing midfield, wide and brought the ball up and to the corner. She was under pressure from a defense man and she made a shot that went slightly wide. Margot was ready in the middle of the field and was able to redirect the shot into the net. An excellent goal and a great example of how positioning and support can get the goal.
The second goal came from a corner kick kicked by Kate Freda. She placed the ball perfectly infront of the net and Emily McDonald swooped in and made a beautiful shot that soared above the goalies head.
That rounded out the scoring portion of the game but there was plenty of great defense work on the field made by all players. You girls really know how step up take the ball away from your opponents. You never backed down!
Great plays by Lily, Abby, Allie, and Kaileigh on the field. They played hard and made sure not to let th eother team get the ball.
A few great goal attempts by Alicia up in the forward position and Anna and Grace did a great job in goal.
Excellent work girls! I am so proud of today's win. Practice hard tomorrow - the first in awhile.
9/28 vs Duxbury Win 2-1!! Captain Hayman & Criscitiello
A game that showed our skills!
We dominated this game form start to finish even though at the beginning of the game we let in a goal on a pass mishap. It was evident to me even after that goal that we were playing great. Even if we didn't win I would have been really proud today. We worked on a lot of the things we've been talking about and it showed. Although we are still clustering together we have increased the number of shots made on goal. The shots made this game were on our target. Their goalie was skilled and caught a lot fo the great plays but I could still see the amazing set up and shoots. Sarah Brennan had some great shots from the right forward position. Most were caught by the goalie but in the 2nd half she was able to weasel the ball away from Duxbury's defenders and dribble in for a great low shot that the goalie couldn't save. Excellent Sarah!
The other goal came from Elle Barrett in the first half playing left mid. On a sweet cross by Grace Baggott, Elle stopped the ball dead and kicked a bal that cleared a defender and was out of the goalie's reach. It was the goal that brought us back from our 0-1 deficit in the first half. Elle's goal gave our the confidence to show Duxbury our stuff. Sarah's goal put us on top early in the second half and we worked very hard the rest of the game to check Duxbury out of our zone.
Lily did a great job today supporting the forward line. She worked so hard and did an excellent job as captain today! Keep up the great work Lily.
Kate Freda tried a new position - stopper. Many of th eplayers on the field appreciated her presence and was gald she stepped up to the challenge of the new position. I also so a lot of good plays by Lizzie in the right mod spot. She took her time and made great game decisions. She is a great asset to the midfield.
Defense did an excellent job in the 2nd half. Jessie, Ali, and Elizabeth worked their tails off along with Isabelle and Aine! Jessie always seems to be in the right spot on defense! Elizabeth and Isabelle did an extremely great job near the end of the second half. They made sure to move the ball up and out of our half.
Allie Bieling stepped into the goal in the second half and she did so quite enthusiastically even with a tie game on the line. She did great and had confidence the team would help defend our half of the field. I also loved how she picked up the ball like it was a teddy bear or something and congratulated herself on her great saves! Nice work Allie!
Emily Raso worked sooo hard this game. she would not back down on any 50-50 balls and proceeded to take away the ball from Duxbury any chance she got. I also though Emily and Grace did a great job with throw ins! Thy made some great tactical plays that helped get the ball out of our zone and into Duxbury's!
Great job girls! you've done me proud once again! Let's work hard at practice tomorrow to scare off NDA friday!!!
9/30 vs NDA Loss 0-1 Captains Raso & Barry
A loss we won't forget!
This game got off to a rocky start. The ref didn't show so we had a delayed start. NDA was ready on the field before we even got to our warmup run and stretching. Players arrived late and the warm ups drills were unorganized and lacked energy. Shots on goal went high and wide and that wasn't a good sign for me. Everyone seemed unfocused and a bit scattered. I heard a lot of complaints about being exhausted by the week. The negativity got me thinking that we might not have it in us to win this game. I knew NDA would be a good competitor and I knew we would have to showcase all of the skills we have learned in order to beat them. Luckily, when I watched Chippari warm up in goal - I was more inspired. She did a great job and I knew she would be unstoppable during the game --- that is unless our players on the field did their part.
Early in the first half I noticed clustering and huge gaps in the field. NDA player's simple passes were able to find openings in our zone. It was a matter of time before they were able to get a good shot in. The shot was really high and out of Julia's reach though the issue really was how that player got open in the first place.
The players on the field worked hard and it took some time before we were able to get a handle on their system of play to keep their players covered. Midfield and defense worked together nicely for the remainder of the first half. I especially think that Aine had a great defensive game!
Sarah Brennan and Abbi made some great goal attempts but their goalie was able to save all our shots. NDA did have a good defensive team but I definitely was able to see how we could take advantage of their weaknesses. Captain Barry stated that NDA was not able to trap the ball well and that we should not hesitate and take the ball away. I think we accomplished this in the second half of the game. The second half was a much better match. We played pretty evenly though I felt Hingham really shined - even though we didn't get goal.
We alway seem to start each game with a deficit. We really need to amp up our defense and get our heads in the game before it is too late and the other team takes advantage of our lackadaisically ways.
I may sound like a broken record but a pre-game winning mindset is a must for a win. I believe that you can tell which team is going to win each game by looking at their warm-up routine. If a team is hustling and is controlling the ball well and with intention they will be the victors. If a team is acting silly, talking about school, walking around, passing the ball without vigor then they will lose.
We have a tricky schedule in the weeks ahead and it is up to everyone on the team including me to want each win before the whistle blows. We can say we want it but we have to show we want it.
Oh and thanks for all the help with clean up for those who I called back to throw trash away and collect the flags - Julia, Isabelle, Aine, and Abbi. For those that didn't stay - shame on you!!!!!
Our game isn't done until all the equipment is away. I know I can't compete with Mrs. Britt's desserts but I really would appreciate more help next game.
10/4 vs Mansfield Loss 0-1 Captains Baggott & Tracy
What a drag!
At 2:40pm - sharp - we were all geared and ready for this game but our bus was in Middleboro - BOOOO! So we waited in the parking lot and helped each with homework assignments. The bus finally arrived at 3:30pm and we are off to Mansfield.
We arrive a 4:15pm at what one of my players described as a "chubby" soccer field - meaning goal to goal the field was very short but corner to corner it was quite quite. So - we strategized how we could use the space more effectively. We had to hurry our warm up along which frazzled us a bit - however we seemed ready for this game. Alicia and Isabelle graciously volunteered to share goal tending duties for the second half of the game and Julia took her usually first half.
As we took the field the beautiful blue sky with wispy silver clouds slowly gave way to dark clouds pregnant with rain. It was only a matter of time before they delivered the cold wet rain that Channel 5's JC told me was expected.
The first half went well. We went toe-toe with Mansfield and were able to keep the game at 0-0 at the half. We had a few shots on goal but nothing went into the net. The Mansfield goalie was able to stop each attempt.
When we made our way out to the field for the second haf the rain had really picked up and uddles were forming on the "chubby" field. The grass was slick and players were drenched and cold. I looked at Isabelle and we both looked at bit defeated but Julia reminded us we were here to win!! Her inspiring words helped us through the second half. However, field conditions got steadily worse and a Mansfield players was able to get a piece of the ball on our end of the field. A shot was taken and the ball was bobbled by Emily due to the very muddy, slick conditions.
We were unable to get a shot in Mansfield net but decided we could beat them when we faced them again. The Mansifeld coach told me that we were her toughest competition yet - which is a great complement since the Hocomock leagues is quite competitive.
I thought overall the game went well - we had a few spacing issues and some ill directed passes that sealed our fate but in the end I though several of the girls played their hearts out! Allie Bieling, Kate Freda, and Elle Barrett were standouts this game. The put their hearts and heads into each minute of the game! We'll get them the next time we face them.
10/11 vs Whitman-Hansen WIN!!! 2-0 Captains Freda & Bieling
Favorite game - yet!
Wow - I love this game. I loved this game because we meant business the minute we started our warmup. Watching you guys in your warmup drills I knew this game was ours. We were focused and ready and had one goal in mind - BEAT WHITMAN_HANSEN!!!! I told you all at the start of this game - it was ours - there was no way they were taking it from us!!!
WE played tremendous from start to finish. The game was played completely in Whitman's half of the field. We were faster, stronger, smarter, and just plan better. We played well, we got the ball up the the forwards. We had excellent field position and we took GREAT shots!!!
I know Whitman was probably thinking this would be an easy game for them seeing as they beat us 3-1 the first time we played them. BUT we showed them how much we have grown as a team since those early September games. Even without our full squad we were able to take them down. This game seems like a turning point for me. I think that it proved what an incredible team you have grown to be. It also is a sign of what is to come for our next games. I think we will surprise Plymouth, NDA, and Mansfield at our next matches. I think we need to show them how great a team you are and how much we have built upon our skills.
Excellent game - Everyone played extremely well and gave it their all. Standouts were Emily MacDonald who scored our first goal and assisted the second goal scored by Margot C. which closed the books on this match. Jessie Leonard also had a great defensive play game. Lizzie, Aine, and Isabelle also did a great job. Anna C. proved herself to be a utility player - one who I could move anywhere and proved that she is an asset for the frosh girls! Abbi showed us her wheels as she raced down Whitman players as a midfielder controlling both the offensive and defensive lines!
Way to go girls - so proud. SEE what you can accomplish when we are focused and ready!!! : )
I can't wait until NDA faces us again!!!
10/14 vs Scituate Win!! 4-3 Captains Leonard & Barrett
This game was one of our most exciting because it was a high scoring game. The first half was a battle but the second half we were shoe-ins to win. We played hard, we were focused. Our passing was splendid. We did a great job with space and thanks to the midfield who stepped it up in the second half - we came home with a victory! We beat this team the first game we played this season but I had a feeling they would come back stronger and ready to show their new skills!
Since I am writing this write-up late I am a little hazy on the details. BUT what I do remember is this game the 2/3 Criscitiello triplets dominated. Margot started us off with our first goal on a nice pass from Kate Freda. Then Anna got a hattrick - 2 goals in the first have and the winning goal in the second half from a great pass from Emily MacDonald.
Margot also played goal the last 20 minutes of the second half - stopping all the balls that came her way. So - we had Anna at the point and Margot defending the goal! Great job Criscitiellos!
We have had several players out sick and injured so the players who are well worked really hard! Stand ous this game were Grace Baggott in sweeper, Emily MacDonald in center mid, Jessie Leonard on wing defense, Kate Freda in stopper and forward, Isabelle in stopper and of course Anna and Margot. great good girls! And thanks to Kaileigh for stepping into goal the second half. She made a great save and wasn't afraid to step up and help her team!!! Thanks Kaileigh!
10/20 vs Duxbury Win 3-0 Captains Britt & McDonald
Emily and Elizabeth did a great job getting everyone ready with pre-game warmups. They really stepped into their captain role making sure everyone was trying their best and working hard.
This game we shined from start to finish. Still down several players due to concussions, colds, flus, and stress fractures - we were still able to maintain our strength even though we didn't have our usual numbers.
Again - I am a little hazy on the details of this game. I do know it was our best played game to date in terms of fundamentals. Spacing was a non issue and we made several shots on goals and we got three on target which was great! I am not sure this game challenged us as others have but we were able to play the game well and used the basics to take down Duxbury!
Grace did a great job in sweeper. Kate Freda did excellent in forward and Lily was a powerhouse on Midfield wing! Emily MacDonald was a force in center mid scoring the final goal that sealed the fate of this game!
Margot did excellent in forward and was supported by Elle and Sarah on the wings who made excellent contributions this game!!
10/21 vs Oliver Ames Loss 0-1 Captains Hayman, Freda, & Lumnar
Wow - this game got my heat pumping in the final 10 minutes. We had a few special guests for our game - my neice Alexa and husband Mike. They both said you girls played excellent and it was too bad you didn't win! They also said you were sweet and nice! I could have told them that!!!
You girls played so hard this game. We have some moments where we bunched together which hurt us but I think you guys played well and I am not disappointed in the result. The game marked the full return of Emily Raso who did a tremendous job on D. She worked so hard and played her best game yet! Julia did excellent in goal the first half giving us a 0-0 start to the second half. She also played strong on right forward and in center mid. Great game Julia.
Wow - Sarah Brennan had some unbelievable crosses. and we had some close goals from shots and breakaways but Margot and Kate Freda. Emily MacDonald had a great rebounding shot that hit the cross bar and Margot was ready to get a piece of the ball but it was shot wide. Great attempts girls!!
Abby Ruggiero in goal --- holy smokes!! There were some nasty shot fired at her but she was able to stop them. My neice was impressed!!!
Margot also stepped up and play goal in the second half - we had our best goalies for this game but one was able to sneak by.
Although OA is a young team - they have the skills and the speed. I know we weren't wowed by any individual player but I think they may have been our toughest game to date. They got you girls running and working your hardest. NDA was a great team too but they had some ringer players. This team worked as a team really well without much standout talent. Like I said - they used the basic skills to win this game - great passes, great positioning, and they were excellent on being on the move after they made a pass. They got open any chance they got. They played smart soccer. I d feel that we have more talent than their team but they were able to work together well and lazy wasn't in their vocabulary. Let's take a few notes on their play and use it in our games for the rest of the season and when we face them again - next Friday. We will have our full force next Friday and maybe even a special guest star who we miss dearly : ) !!! I really think it will be fun to play them again and of course beat them this time!!! I think you will be surprised by their home field. Wat til you see it!
Another standout game for Kate freda in forward. Excellent job by Isabelle and Grace in defense. Lily also showed her speed and her did a great job of taking the ball away from their players. I also thought Lizzie McMuff had a tremendous game.
We will get them next time!!!
10/24 vs Silver Spit Handshake Tie 1-1
One of the record books --
We arrived at Silver Lake filled with anticipation. I warned the girls that the fields would be the most beautiful fields they ever saw. And they were in awe - I had to get them focused on the game as they were thinking that the grass would be excellent for picnics or grass angels.
And get ready they did. The warm up went well - led by Captains Emily Raso & Julia Chippari chosen for the hard work throughout the season, excellent play in Friday's game, and superior team spirit.
When the game started I knew right away that Hingham looked good. They looked much better than the competition - I felt it only a matter of time before the first goal went in. You girls played beautifully - There was bunching here and there but the girls corrected themselves as the game clock ticked on. AND THEN the incident happened....
On a Silver Lake Corner kick the ball was put into play and batted out by the defense. The ball was deflected to the center of the goal and a Silver Lake player took a good shot. Julia batted at the ball and couldn't get a reach on it. Jessie was standing the goal helping to defend against the shot and without thinking she put her hand up to thwart the ball away from our goal. Needless to say the whistle was blown and we were setting up for a penalty kick. But the surprise came when the official threw Jessie off the field and gave her a red card. I was flabbergasted. I tried to send on a new player to take her place but I was informed that he was playing a solid red card in which Hingham would have to play the rest of the game with only 10 players to Silver Lake's 11. I couldn't believe it - it was an honest mistake at the freshman soccer level. Yes - indeed a deliberate unsportsmanlike hand ball maneuver by a non-goalie player in the box does result in a re card but I wouldn't have called Jessie's mistake deliberate or unsportsmanlike.
But hey - it's the ref's call. Even if in the past similar events at the freshman level have occurred and have not ended in a red card violation. So I checked with the Silver Lake coach to see if she agreed with the call and she seemed quite satisfied that her team would have an advantage for the game.
Silver Lake set up for the penalty kick and it was a great shot that got past Julia.
Oh well - I knew we could get them even with a man out. Heck, they could have had Hingham hop on one leg for the rest of the game and I think would would have still tied them.
Hingham played hard for the rest of the half and during the half time break there was serious intensity in our game huddle. We made some adjustments that I knew would work. We had the forwards stick close together and the mids stay wide. They worked so well together!!
The tying goal came from a corner kick from Kate Freda that bounced around th emiddle of the goal for awhile. Margot got her whole body facing the net and got a great header goal off on the rebounding shots.
You gals did excellent!!! Lizzie McMuff in Center mid did an excellent job hanging in the space between mid and forward. She kept stealing the ball from Silver Lake and moving the ball up the field. Isabelle rocked the right defense position. She played like another midfielder but was able to race back to support Grace and Aine and Emily in defense. Isabelle's throw-ins were incredible.
Kate also did an great job on the field in stopper in the second half. She dominated the field and her excellent play intimidated Silver Lake to the point that the Silver Lake coach was so nervous their team was going to lose with a one man advantage. She claimed foul even though Kate;s play was clean - she was just simply a more skilled player.
I also loved the forward force team at the end of the game - Margot, Anna, Elle, and Sarah did a great job battling for the win.
Even though we tied (and you know I hate ties 7-5-1. I hate that -1) - in my heart you guys won this game. You played your hearts out with so much strength and skill! I a so proud and as you should be too. It isn't easy playing a game with a disadvantage.
Now that the Silver Spit Handshake game is behind us - let's get pumped for our game vs Plymouth South!!!
