FAAF Spring Class                                 Jan 1, 2009

The new FAAF schedule will be posted soon and classes will resume January 12th.   Expect a few changes from last semester.


Fit as a Fighter Program                    Sept 25, 2008

The Fit as a Fighter program is in full swing.  Classes are offerd through the University of Hawaii, Hilo and are free for students at UHH.  There are a total of 7 classes a week:  5 beginner classes and 2 advanced classes. Class sizes have been anywere from 8-20 on average. Classes are being held throughout the semester at the University Student Life Center.  Check the SLC front desk for class times.  


Last Class of Spring Semester                                Thurs, May 15, 2008

Our last class will be May 15, 2008 Thursday night for the semester.  Classes will then be suspended until the middle of August.  There will be NO classes over the summer.

Spring 08 Promotions                                               Tues, May 13. 2008

Promotions were a big success.  Six people had enough classes to go test for a new rank, and over 30 people came to support and watch.  Congratulations!

O'Hell Week  all night volunteering.                                 May 10, 2008

 The Karate club will be volunteering for one night at O'Hell week from 10pm -6 am May 10th.  We will stay up all night and be staffing the campus center. This will allow students to have a place to study all night long the week before finals start.

Guest Instructor                                               First week of April 2008

We had a guest sempai goju instructor  visiting from the mainland to teach class for the week.  His expertise was greatly appreciated, and he really inspired the club to train even harder. 

Classes Canceled Over Spring Break        March

  We will not be having class on 3/23,   3/25,  and 3/27.

 Thursday Class now @ Old Gym        3/4/08

 Thursday Class is back on!!  We have moved the location of our Thursday class to the old gym and changed the time to 8:00-9:30pm.  The location is marked on our map, click "were are classes?" on the side bar.

 

Change in Thursday class time/place   2/5/08

Currently our Thursday class is suspended due to a lack of facilities.  We will start it again ASAP as soon as we get reservations for a new room. Check back often to see when we will be having class again.

International Night Performance       2/15/08

The Club will be representing Okinawa and Japan at the University of Hawaii, Hilo 2008 International Night during the Friday night show.  We will be performing kata Saifa followed by an exciting Bunkai performance by three karate ka.  Tickets for the show cost 3 dollars for students, and can be purchased at the theater in advance. FYI it usually sells out early so get tickets now.

Guest Instructor                           Early April

We will be having a guest sempai instructor visiting from the mainland for the first week in April. We will be having several special classes in his honor TBA.

Visiting Black Belts                     Late February 

We will be having two Goju black belts visiting our club from the mainland mid to late February.  We may hold an extra class for them while they are here TBA.

SPRING 2008! New semester!

              Welcome New Students!!!!       

 Karate classes will start the first week of academic classes at UHH.  Our class times will be the same as last semester for now.  We will likely be changing times (slightly) the first or second week of school due to room availability.  So, check the website often for any change in class times for the semester.

Results and Goodbyes     December 20th  2007

Winter 2007 promotional results have been posted. We are also saying good bye to long time student Amanda Jo who just graduated and is off to graduate school. Congrats on your degree Amanda we will miss you!

Last class of 2007        December 13

The last class of the semester will be on the 13th. Classes will resume January 15th 2008 (the first Tuesday of the new semester).

 

Winter 2007 Promotions               December 11, 2007

Promotions will be held on Tuesday at 7:30 pm in our usual training facility. Those getting there early should arrive at 7:00 pm to review kata. Promotions will consist of kihon ichi, kihon ido, kata, and Kumite. We welcome anyone to join us to watch in support of those going through promotions.

Martial Arts Talk Nov 1

Sensei is giving a martial arts presentation entitled "Anatomy and Physiology of a Martial Artist". The talk is open to the public and is taking place in UCB 100 at 12:30 pm.

Front Page Newspaper Feature Oct 1-14

Goju Ryu Karate, Hilo was featured on the front page of the Kekalahea Newspaper for our continuing efforts to give students a great place to train! The article gave a very positive review of the club and highlighted our strengths! Look for it distributed around town!

Iron Man Triathlon               Oct 13, 2007

The club traveled to the other side of the island to watch the Ironman World Championships in Kailua Kona. We rented a 13 passenger van from the university for the day and filled it with students. It was an great day and was very inspiring to see the world's best compete in one of the hardest and longest races in the world! 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.4 mile run! It was tiring just watching them finish the race! So we also spent a good deal of time laying in the sun and taking a dip in the ocean!

Miyo's Japanese Restaurant! Sept 19

At the beginning of the semester we usually have a good night out on the town with everybody. We are going to a traditional Japanese restaurant called Miyo's then seeing a movie. Some good R&R and we all get to know our fellow classmates. We are meeting 5:30 pm in front of Hale Ikena on campus, then car pooling to the restaurant.

New Semester August 20th

SUMMER BREAK has FINISHED! Karate classes will resume immediately. First Class starts Aug 21st.

Promotional Examinations May 8th

Promotional exams took place at 6:30pm and was followed by a pot luck dinner. 5 people had successfully completed enough classes and able to test. It consisted of students being tested on kihon ichi, kihon ido, kata, and our two green belts performed a kumite or sparring evaluation.


Campus Center "O-hell-week" April 28 & May 3


The club will be staffed the pre-finals week from 10pm-6am. We stayed up ALL night selling food and proctoring computer labs. It is a small price to pay for funding and free training space on campus!

K1 GP Tournament in Honolulu April 28-29 2007

7 members of the team traveled to Honolulu watch the 2007 K1 Grand Prix. See pictures. It was an elimination tournament for a spot at the final in Osaka, Japan in December competing for HUGE prize money. It consisted of some of the top stand up fighters in the world in a 8 person elimination bracket. Some of top international karate fighters in world fought including Gluabe Fietosa, Aleksandr Pichkunov, Yusuke Fujimoto, Peter Graham, and Takumi Sato
The karate ka had GREAT success. We saw plenty of ushiro mawashi geri (spinning back heel kick), and jodan yoko geri KOs from them. The karate fighters had noticeably the best kicks and leg work of all the fighters. We flew there Saturday morning, attended the fights in the evening returning the following day. Guest Instructor Visit April 3rd & 4th

We had honored guest instructor conducting class for 3 days straight. Sempai has been instructing Goju Ryu Karate over 35 years and traveled from the mainland to work with us. We worked extra hard and really got our techniques "cleaned up". It was a wonderful experience and look forward to hosting more high ranking instructors in the future. Thanks you very much.
