The Spring 2012 Community and University Honors Seminar created a Strategic Plan for a signature partnership between the Duquesne University Honors College and the Daisy Wilson Artist Community, with the intention of restoring the August Wilson boyhood home and converting into a center for artists in the Hill District. For more information, see our Strategic Plan. The Spring 2009 Community and University Honors Seminar at Duquesne University created an asset map of the Hill District. The Hill was once a booming cultural center. Unfortunately, thanks in part to a failed urban redevelopment project, the area experienced an increase in crime and poverty, and the Hill has become increasingly isolated. Negative stereotypes of the Hill District spread, causing people to ignore and avoid the region. However, the neighborhood still has a lot to offer the people of the Pittsburgh area. It’s full of historical landmarks (including the August Wilson house), businesses, schools, churches, and organizations that enhance community life. Our goal is to bring all the great things about the Hill District to the attention of both community members and outside investors. The asset map identifies the many unique and valuable things the Hill District has to offer. The strategic plan for the Signature Partnership explains how Duquesne's Honors College hopes to continue to contribute to revitalizing the Hill. |
