How is Memory Stored on Computers?

Create a presentation in PowerPoint on one of the Technologies listed below (I will be assigning them in class). The presentation should last 5 min and be delivered in class. It must answer the following questions:
  • Start by giving examples of typical storage mediums that use your technology (for instance, Paper technology might be punch cards).
  • How much data is typically stored on it?
  • What functions is it typically used for?
  • What is its history?
  • How does it work (use lots of pictures)?
  • How do you keep it safe (i.e. what things can destroy it)?
  • What advice would you give to somebody who wants to buy it (i.e. what are the characteristics that you should consider in making a purchase)?
The PowerPoint presentation should be nicely designed, easy to read from a distance, with lots of images to illustrate your points.

Computer Memory Technologies:
  1. Paper: Punch Cards, Bar Codes
  2. Magnetic: Tape
  3. Magnetic: Hard Drive
  4. Optical: Blu-Ray Discs
  5. Optical: CD's
  6. Semiconductor: RAM
  7. Semiconductor: Flash Memory
  8. Holographic Data Storage
Where to start: Try doing a Google search on "computer data storage"

Computer Memory

Copy the following question and paste onto the end of your "3-Extensions and Memory.doc" file:

4. Put the following file sizes into the proper units. For example, 356,000 bytes would be: 356KB.
  • 23,000 bytes
  • 1,670,000,000 bytes
  • 456,000 bytes
  • 56,000,000,000,000 bytes
  • 95,000,000,000 bytes
  • 356 bytes

File Management Exercise

  • Create a folder in your folder on the server, and name it: "File Management: your name"
  • Create 20 new folders inside of this one: name them 1 ... 20
  • Create another folder named: "Numbers 1-5"
    • Move folders 1 through 10 into that folder.
    • Delete folders 6 through 10 so that now there are only 5 folders inside of this folder.
  • Create another folder named: "Numbers 11-15" (do this at the same level as "Numbers 1-5" NOT inside of it)
    • Move folders 11 through 20 into that folder.
    • Delete folders 16 through 20 so that now there are only 5 folders inside of this folder.
  • Create a folder named "Numbers." Move the folders "Numbers 1-5" and "Numbers 11-15" into that folder.
  • Create a new folder named "Sports"
  • Create 10 folders inside of Sports: each folder should have the name of a different sport.
  • Rank the sports from the ones that you like best to the ones that you like least. Put a number (from 01 - 10) in front of the name so that when you sort the list they are in order. For example, it might look like:
    • 01 Soccer
    • 02 Football
    • 03 Surfing
    • etc.
  • Copy the File Management folder to: server/assignments/Class X/File Management
