Clarification of measurement of High Street Mile by Justin Kuo from USATF New England (7/15/2010)

"The Straight Line Distance, which appears on all certifications, is the distance "as the crow flies".  It's used strictly for record purposes for calculating the course Separation value. If someone broke the current american record on a course that has a separation greater than 30%, then they would need to provide evidence that that the runner was not aided by the wind.

The High Street Mile has a Straight Line Distance of 1600 meters and a Separation of 99%. The straight line distance value is less than one-mile (1609.344 meters) because the road has a slight curve. (see the attached image.) Had the road been absolutely straight, then the straight line distance would have been 1609 meters and the separation would be 100%."
