First Trimester: Week of Sept. 8 to 11th — We learned the rules of the computer lab and then practiced moving objects on the SmartBoard to review names of computer related objects. Week of Sept. 14 to 18th — This week we third graders created acrostic name poems by viewing the Acrostic Slideshow (see Third Grade All below to download) and using an interactive acrostic tool to help create their poems. Week of Sept. 21 to Sept. 25 — Third graders practiced logging in and out using their own usernames and passwords and and then got to explore links of their choice on the Highland Student Links page. Week of Sept. 28 to Oct. 2 — Third graders practiced logging in and out using their own usernames and passwords and then learned internet safety by viewing the PowerPoint slideshow (see Fourth Grade All page below to download) called Be CyberSmart. Oct. 5 to Oct. 9 — To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, third graders students selected famous Hispanic people they wanted to learn more about by reading from the Famous Hispanics Biographies Menu. Oct. 12 to Oct. 16 — To continue to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, third graders viewed artwork by famous Hispanic artists from the Smithsonian American Art Museum's site Latino Voices in American Art . They listened to artist's voices describing their artwork, and compared and contrasted two pieces of artwork by these artists using a venn diagram Oct. 19 to Oct. 23 — Make connections to text, within text, and among texts across the subject areas by visiting the Bookflix site to read and compare stories. Oct. 26 to Oct 30 — Students will examine the features of journals and diaries on the Reading Brain website and then select any of the related reading activities on that menu to do independently. Nov. 2 to Nov. 6 — This week students learn to place an icon into their dock for easy access to Scholastic's SRI materials. Then they will take a reading placement inventory on a topic of their choice. Nov. 9 to Nov. 13 — This week students will reflect on the theme of a story by listening to a story on the website StorylineStellaluna. Listen and read along as Pamela Reed reads the story. When finished, they can either learn more about bats by following the links when they scroll down the Related Activities list or they can choose another story to listen to. interactive tool. website. Scroll through the "choose a story" menu until they find Nov. 16 to Nov. 20 — Students will view the Decomposing_Numbers.notebook activity to practice strategies for decomposing multi digit numbers using place value concepts and also practice mental math strategies for adding 2 multidigit numbers. Nov. 23 to Nov. 27 — Conference Week and Thanksgiving Vacation Second Trimester: Third Grade All: Nov. 30 to Dec. 4 — This week students will become familiar with the equipment in our new mobile lab. They will practice powering up, and logging in on the Macbook Laptops. They will learn where to plug in their mice and headphones. After they have gotten familiar with the laptops they will use them to open a KidPix drawing space and load the template "My Favorites" from the Idea Machine menu. They will complete this activity by generating lists of their favorite colors, sports, foods, etc. At the end of the period they will practice the procedure for shutting them down and docking them in the Mobile Lab cart for charging. Dec. 7 to Dec 11 — Students will play the game 2001. Partners share one calculator. They do "rock, paper, scissors" to decide who goes first. The winner enters the number 2001 into the calculator. He or she then subtracts any number between 1-99. The first person to reach 0 is the winner. Dec. 14 to Dec. 18 — Students will send Thank You Cards to servicemen to thank them for their service to our country Jan. 4 to Jan. 8 — Students learned to log in to the new log in screens on the laptops and then practiced a variety of trouble shooting techniques in case software is slow to respond, there is an error message about connecting the the internet or screen or sound settings are a problem. Jan. 11 to Jan. 15: Students will learn to import a template into KidPix to create a Fraction Garden Picture. Jan. 18 to Jan. 22 — Students will log into the Highland Timez Attack site to practice basic multiplication facts for fluency. Jan. 25 to Jan. 29 — Students will watch the Discovery Education's United Streaming video Muchmore's Marvelous Machine: The Importance of Place Value. For independent practice they will play the game Base Blocks on the NLVM site. (Students who need intervention on the topic of place value, may select from any of the activities on the Place Value Intervention Page. Feb.1 to Feb. 5 — Go to the Kids Count website. Click on age and do any of the Stamp practice activities. if students finish up through the mixed multipilcation problems they can explore the other games at this site. Feb. 8 to Feb. 12 — Students will view a PowerPoint slideshow introducing the artist Kadinsky and the then will create geometric artwork in the artists style. Points will be given based on the variety of 3-D shapes included and geometric terms correctly identified as outlined on the Project Criteria List. Feb. 15 to Feb. 19 — Students will practice saving a file to their documents folder and then have free choice time. Feb. 22 to Feb. Feb. 26 — Students will view a couple videos from the "Kids Against Bullying" website including the "Mean Girl" and "Together We Stand" Webisodes. They will then open up KidPix to create illustrate stories about problems with bullies or what it means to be the opposite of a bully (a friend). Mar. 1 to Mar. 5: Students will practice saving their Bullying Illustrations to the server. Mar. 8 to March 12: Students will identify lines of symmetry in quilt squares by completing the online symmetry lesson . Mar. 15 to Mar. 18: Students will practice saving to the server. Third Trimester:Mar. 29 to Apr. 2 — Students will view complete an online lesson on perimeter. Apr. 5 to Apr. 9 — Students are introduced to sample constructed response items and then practice logging in to the SRI program. Apr. 12 to Apr. 16 — Students complete the SRI reading lexile levels test. Apr. 19 to Apr. 23 — Students practice multiplication basic facts by working through the lesson The Sea Lesson 8. Apr. 26 to Apr. 30 — Students analyze data by working through the lesson The Sea Lesson 15. May 3 to May 7 — Students will review and identify parts of books by viewing the Parts of Books slide show. Then they will independently practice the concepts by viewing the online lesson . Click on the pencil for more practice and on the little girl for the follow up game. May 10 to May 14 — Students will create my favorite memory pictures in KidPix. Export as jpg and save in their document folder. |
