To find out what's happening in 4th Grade classes, read below and visit the pages below for downloads: First Trimester 5th Grade All: Week of Sept. 8 to 11th — We learned the rules of the computer lab and then practiced moving objects on the SmartBoard to review names of computer related objects. See 5th Grade All page below if interested in downloading either the slideshow or Notebook interactive activity. Week of Sept. 14 to 18th — This week fifth graders created acrostic name poems by viewing the Acrostic Slideshow (see Fifth Grade All page below to download) and using an interactive acrostic tool to help create their poems. Week of Sept. 21 to Sept. 25 — Fift graders practiced logging in and out using their own usernames and passwords and then got to explore links of their choice on the Highland Student Links page. Week of Sept. 28 to Oct. 2 — Fifth graders reviewed logging in and out using their own usernames and passwords and then learned internet safety by viewing the PowerPoint slideshow (see Fifth Grade All page below to download) called Be CyberSmart. Week of October 5 to October 9: To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, fifth graders students selected famous Hispanic people they wanted to learn more about by reading from the Famous Hispanics Biographies Menu . Oct. 12 to Oct. 16 — To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, fifth graders viewed artwork by famous Hispanic artists from the Smithsonian American Art Museum's site Latino Voices in American Art . They listened to artist's voices describing their artwork, and compared and contrasted two pieces of artwork by these artists using a venn diagram interactive tool. Oct. 19 to Oct. 23 — Students will research ocean biome animals (explore science links on the JC Kid Friendly Links Page) and learn to save documents to their documents folder. Oct. 26 to Oct. 30 — Students will read and analyze two different stories on the Bookflix website. Choose the following stories from the Adventures Category: The Scrambled States of America and Types of Maps. They should watch The Scrambled States of America and then read the book Types of Maps. If students are done with reading the stories, they should do any of the activities in the Puzzlers! Nov. 2 to Nov. 6 — This week students learn to place an icon into their dock for easy access to Scholastic's SRI materials. Then they will take a reading placement inventory on a topic of their choice. Nov. 9 to Nov. 13 — This week students will reflect on the theme of a story by listening to a story on the website StorylineThank You Mr. Falker. Listen and read along as Jane Kazmerack reads the story. When finished they record their reflection about the plot and theme and then can either learn more about dyslexia by following the link under "More Activities" to or they can choose to listen to another story. Nov. 16 to Nov. 20 — This week 5th grade students learned the history of our country's first Thanksgiving by viewing Discovery Education's United Streaming video "Animated Hero Classics: William Bradford and The First Thanksgiving. Nov. 23 to Nov. 27 — Conference Week and Thanksgiving Vacation Reading Group Moving On: Students in this group participate in a number of reading activities based on the 5th Grade trimester standards. See 5th Grade Reading Moving On page for a complete listing of the activities aligned to these standards. Second Trimester All: Nov. 30 to Dec 4 — Students will practice multi digit multiplication by completing the Math Patterns worksheet using a calculator. Any students who finish early may generate multiplication patterns of their own. Dec. 7 to Dec 11 — Students will play Make Ten: Partners share one calculator. They do "rock, paper, scissors" to decide who goes first. They can add any decimal number between .01 to .99 to the number that is displayed. The object is to be the first one to reach exactly 10.00. website. Scroll through the "choose a story" menu until they find Dec. 14 to Dec. 18 — Students will send Thank You Cards to servicemen to thank them for their service to our country. Jan. 4 to Jan. 8 — Students learned to log in to the new log in screens on the laptops and then practiced a variety of trouble shooting techniques in case software is slow to respond, there is an error message about connecting the the internet or screen or sound settings are a problem. Jan. 11 to Jan. 15 — Students will log into the Highland Timez Attack site to practice basic multiplication facts for fluency. Jan. 18 to Jan. 22 — Students will practice math test taking strategies on Eduplace's Test Quest: Be a Better Test Taker site. Jan. 25 to Jan. 29 — Students will learn to utilize the calculator found in their dashboard to truncate and understand how to represent the decimal remainder for a division problem displayed in the calculator to the whole number remainder. Feb. 1 to Feb. 5 — Students will practice taking an online math test on division concepts found on Eduplace Test Practice:Chapter 4 site. Feb. 8 to Feb. 12 — Students will view a PowerPoint slideshow introducing the artist Kadinsky and the then will create geometric artwork in the artists style. Points will be given based on the variety of 3-D shapes included and geometric terms correctly identified as outlined on the Project Criteria List. Feb. 15 to Feb. 19 — Students will play a team game designed by fellow classmates to identify the definitions of unknown vocabulary words. Feb. 22 to Feb. 26 — Students will practice reading a variety of graphs by visiting the Spy Guys Interactive - Understanding and
Interpreting Graphs site. Mar. 1 to Mar. 5 — Students will view a couple
videos from the "Kids Against Bullying" website including the "Mean Girl" and "Together We
Stand" Webisodes. They will listen to several poems and a song and then write
their own reflective journal entries or poems. Mar. 15 to Mar. 19 — Students will practice saving their bullying stories to the server. See 5th Grade Reading Moving On Trimester 2 page for a complete listing of the activities aligned to these standards. Third Trimester All: Mar. 29 to Apr. 2 — Students explore the geometry concepts of angles, surface area and volume, area and perimeter, triangles, Pythagoras, similarity and congruence, transformations and shape classifications. Apr. 5 to Apr. 9 — Students are introduced to sample constructed response items and then practice logging in to the SRI program. Apr. 12 to Apr. 16 — Students complete the SRI reading lexile levels test. Apr. 19 to Apr. 23 — Students complete Math Live Lesson # 7 to practice Addition and Subtraction of Decimals. Apr. 26 to Apr. 30 — Students view the photographs from
my trip to Ellis Island to introduce the topic of writing a Hero
Story.Then they begin their first drafts of their own Hero Stories. May 10 to May 14 — Students complete their final drafts of Hero Stories. May 17 to May 21 — Students review the ROSE problem solving method and then solve fraction task warm ups. May 24 to May 28 — Students record their thinking as they solve a fraction problem solving task. May 31 to June 4 — Students view student examples of a fraction task to understand the dimensions of the scoring guide. June 7 to June 11 — Students review math concepts presented this year by selecting from among and play games on the Calculation Nation website.
