Look what we're learning!

 Math

We are reviewing strategies for addition and subtraction that we learned in 1st grade, such as counting on, making 10's, and using related facts. It will be very important to learn all of the addition and subtraction facts by heart in 2nd grade.

Writers' Workshop

We are learning how to add more details to our writing so we can write stories that are exciting for our readers! We will also learn to organize our writing by using topic sentences, conclusions, capitals at the beginning of each sentence, and the correct punctuation at the end!

 Reading

Comprehension

Understanding and analyzing what we read is the ultimate goal of reading. If you don't understand, it is important to go back and re-read the text. There are a lot of strategies we will be learning to help us understand and think about what we are reading.

Accuracy

We are learning to use a variety of strategies to read words we don't know.  If we get stuck on a word we should: say the beginning sound, look at the picture, think about what would make sense, and read the sentence again.

Fluency

We are working hard to sound smooth and exciting when we read by reading in phrases and adding expression to our voices. To be a fluent reader you have to be able to read the words correctly and understand what you are reading at the same time!

Expanding Vocabulary

Reading is a time to notice and figure out the meaning of new words. We can use strategies to understand new words even if we have not heard them before. The more words we learn the better readers we can become!

Spelling

We are learning to read short vowel patterns and spell them correctly. Spelling words correctly will help our writing become easier for our readers to understand.

Science

We are learning about the life cycles of animals and insects. Did you know that when a tadpole gets back legs but still has a tail it is called a froglet?

Social Studies

We are learning about American heroes and how they changed people's lives. We are also learning that we can use Monta Loma's core values to become heroes ourselves. Responsibility, respect, compassion, courage, and hard work will help us make our lives and the lives of those around us better.
