Wonderful news! Mrs. Kliegman was a winner of a $10,000 grant from Optimum Lightpath! The grant will allow the library to purchase several more NOOKcolor eReaders for students to borrow. Look for the new eReaders to arrive towards the end of January 2012.

NOOKColors Go Home!

posted Oct 23, 2011 3:46 AM by Karen Kliegman

This past week, 4 NOOKColors went home with 4 lucky fifth graders! After a lesson on how to use and take care of the NOOK, students were excited to borrow one for a week. Each one of the library's six NOOKs are loaded with 27 eBooks. Some of our NOOKColors were purchased through a grant Mrs. Kliegman obtained last year from LISMA. Students can choose the book they wish to read, take notes, highlight passages, and look up words. Our first students to borrow the NOOKS will participate in a survey and interview with Mrs. Kliegman to discuss the benefits and any difficulties with using them.

Students and their families also can access other another 35 eBooks at home on their computers by clicking on "Destiny OPAC". A password is needed to access these books. Please contact Mrs. Kliegman for the password if you need it!
Finally, more ebooks will be added to both the NOOKs and DestinyQuest in the very near future, so check back soon!

Searingtown Library Gets Off to a Great Start!

posted Sep 17, 2011 6:58 AM by Karen Kliegman   [ updated Sep 17, 2011 7:23 AM ]

The Searingtown School Library got a new look this summer! We have a new ceiling, new lighting, fresh paint, and some new bookshelves, all of which help to make the library a warm and welcoming place
for students. All classes have visited the library and have been 'wowed' by how nice and spacious it feels.

Our Virtual Library Website also got a makeover! I hope you will have time to click around and visit some of the wonderful resources on this site.

Over the first two weeks of school students were given a tour of the new library layout. K-2 classes reviewed library vocabulary and book care during their lessons. 3-5 classes have all been given their own accounts on DestinyQuest, our online library catalog. In the weeks to come, students will learn how to successfully navigate DestinyQuest, review and/or recommend books to their friends, and create their very own virtual bookshelves. Here are some of the books read to students during the past two weeks---------------------------------------->

Our NOOKs are just about ready for their debut! Students will have an opportunity to explore the NOOKs in the library; sometime after that NOOKs will be allowed to be borrowed. Stay tuned!

Have you noticed the new look of the Searingtown Virtual Library website? Mrs. Kliegman has been busy this summer reorganizing the site and adding many new links and information portals. Note that Navigation Links are now across the top, with dropdown menus on many of them.  Students may want to take a look at the Kids' Faves page for games and fun kid sites. Keep your eye on the site for more updates!
