Getting to Know Google Docs

Session Overview

  • Introduction to Google Docs
  • The Look of Google Docs is changing~

    • Right now, the changes are only available in the Documents List, and are only visible to people who choose to have the new look. To enable the new look in your Documents List, click Try the new look in the upper right of your window. This won't affect the way Google Docs works.  However, over the course of 2011, we'll make more changes to the look and functionality of Google Docs. You'll see these changes in your account in a variety of products, and we’ll make sure to keep you updated as we introduce these changes.

    • The Upload button is now an icon rather than a text button. It shows an up-arrow coming out of a hard drive.

    • Advanced options such as Narrow by and Sort moved to the upper right of the Documents List.

    • Here's a summary of the current changes:

The actions menu no longer shows in individual rows of the Documents List.

You can change the number of documents displayed on your screen. To show more documents on your screen, click the gear icon in the upper right and select Documents settings. Then, check the box next to "Use denser view (show more documents in your list)" and click Save.

    • And more!

Hands-on Activity, Part 1: Collaborative Document Creation:
    • Open up this document.
    • Find your assigned row in the table and add 2-3 ways you might be able to incorporate Google Docs into your teaching world.
    • Wait for everyone to finish.
    • Now go back and add a comment to another person's idea.
    • Review the responses by others in the workshop.
    • Add at least one comment to one of the responses.
    • If anyone adds a comment to your entry, review it and respond to it.

Hands-on Activity, Part 2: Creating Your Own Document--SHARING, PRIVACY, PRINTING, AND PUBLISHING
    Summary
In Google Docs, when you want to send a document for others to see or edit, you don’t need to email an attachment or upload a file for others to access. Instead, you can share one online version of your document and specify who has permission to make changes and who has permission only to view.

    1. Log-in to your Google Account, then 'create a new document'.
    2.  Share your email address with the person sitting next to you.
    3. NAME your document: Collaborative Story, your last name
    4. Look at the image on the smartboard
    5. Start writing a story, based on that image, until you are told to stop.
    6. Now; SHARE YOUR STORY WITH THE PERSON SITTING NEXT TO YOU
    7. Look at the next image on the smartboard. ADD A PARAGRAPH TO  YOUR PARTNER'S STORY. USE A DIFFERENT FONT AND FONT COLOR.
    8. INSERT AN IMAGE INTO THE STORY.
    9. INSERT A DRAWING INTO THE STORY.
    10. INSERT A COMMENT INTO THE STORY.
