Welcome to our free high resolution object-oriented land-cover classification tutorial
.
This tutorial uses only data freely available online from MassGIS.  Thank you, MassGIS!  Learn about the roots of our tutorial here.

Before you get started . . .

Here you will learn how to:

  • Create a land-cover dataset that captures small extent phenomena like trees, shrubs, sheds, golf course sand traps, and more

  • incorporate object-oriented classification methods into your land-cover mapping project

  • include ancillary data in your classification and validation

  • validate without visiting the field

  • determine the accuracy of your population given the accuracy of your sample

  • include strata in validation which you suspect are better characterized by a phenomenon on the ground which cannot be classified using the reference image alone
  • create soft classified maps of any of your land-cover categories or validation strata

  • analyze the proportions of land-covers at any scale, such as by town, census block, or parcel

  • report mean NDVI or other indices for a given land-cover by a given geography.  For example, report NDVI for fine green areas by parcel.
  • how to manage your project so that data is organized and team members put the most into the project and get the most out of the project that they can
