Dasein

A word created from the German "da", there, and "sein", to be; literally translated as "being there". This literal translation means little to begin with, however, and it is best to return to this phrase after a deeper consideration.

In the initial definition of Dasein in his book Being and Time, Heidegger creates Dasein as a special type of Entity, an Entity to which its own existence has been revealed. Dasein is variously called the inquirer and the self amongst other nomers. At some level, Dasein is simply us, our mind itself, but Heidegger is very careful to never explicitly say so. In the book, the Philosopher is veiled in the manner with which he treats Dasein, which can lead to much confusion as to how one should interpret it. Dasein, rightly, exhibits a multifaceted character that withstands multiple interpretations, and this quality has given rise to much artistic appreciation of the Philosopher's work. But we are concerned with logic, and need to pinpoint a single interpretation. Dasein in fact has a dualistic character; one of Function and of Entity.

In the simplest possible sense, one should envisage Dasein, the process of our Being, as having two parts: The Function of Dasein is executed by our brains, it is the procedure that parts of our central nervous system enact. The Entity of Dasein is the Entity (akin to a memory) held within our minds of the Function of Dasein itself, thus it is ourselves; to use classical terminology, what many have identified as our ego.

From a developmental point of view, therefore, we are born and our instance of the Function of Dasein is initiated. It functions for many years in the company of others, other instances of Dasein. Through these others, through communication, the Interpretations and actions of the origin Function of Dasein are slowly refracted back into the memory of itself as an Entity. Coupled with other key Entities, the now complete Dasein, the symbiosis of Function and Entity, can achieve self awareness. This process is described in more detail in the Birth of Dasein.

Returning to the literal translation now, the "there" we can see to be the separation of the Entity from the Function, the distance it exhibits between its two parts that other Entities do not possess. This signifies the unique reflexive quality of Dasein, whereby a function, in the human case our minds, may observe itself there; there within its own simulation of the world, as a "thing" existing within that world.

Summary

As it pertains to the task of creating synthetic intelligence and this model, one should envisage Dasein as being first a function of the Interpretation of Entities, a computational process, which through enaction within the World and alongside the They develops an Entity of itself within itself and through this machination becomes able to take purposeful control of itself.
